Hi,

One of my Dell laptops (32 bit version) has Windows XP.

I want to install Windows 7 (32 bit) on it. I went to microsoft.com,
hoping I can buy that version (download the ISO file), but all
I found available to download is a replacement (if you lost
yours). You have to enter a registration key in order to download
it.

Does anyone know where I can buy, from a trusted site, a
32 bit version of Windows 7? Note: I have the 64 bit version.

Thank You in advance, John

OK, reach over to that 64-bit version. Take the key from it.

Go to the Windows 7 download page which is registration-blocked
and pretend to download the 32 bit version to go with that key.

Now, you have the ISO for the 32-bit Windows 7 in hand.

You still have to acquire a license key, which is
still a separate exercise.

Many license keys today, are "made" by chopping up an MSDN subscription.
When you buy such a license key from the MSDN subscription holder,
this is likely a violation of the license terms, and the OS just
might become Not Genuine, like if say, it's in another country
beside the subscription holder. MSDN license keys are for things
like test installs and evaluation by the subscription holder. There
might be ten licenses per subscription, and that's what they chop
up and sell.

Boxed software, there could be some, you never know. I bought
an OEM system installer one, maybe seven years ago, for $150 or so.
That contains a DVD in a cardboard DVD envelope and a COA sticker.
The DVD was the holograph kind, and was for 64 bit only. I would
need to download the 32-bit, if I actually wanted to install the
32-bit version, and then I'd still use the same license key which
is good for either 32-bit or 64-bit install.

You can also use DAZloader to license the OS and activate it.

But shipment of legit materials, under the intended terms, probably
stopped six or seven years ago, and we've been "running off remaining
stock" ever since. You have to chop up a lot of MSDN subscriptions
to handle the demand.

I've bought several W7 licences and downloads from
https://theunitysoft.com/product/windows-7-home-premium-3264bit-product-key-coa/
and they've always worked ok - with no suggestion that they weren't
genuine when I registered them with Microsoft.

I needed the 32-bit version for running in a virtual machine under W10,
to enable my other half to continue using legacy software which won't
run on 64-bit systems.

They only seem to have W7 Home at the moment, but they do sometimes have
the Pro version - all at ridiculously low prices. My guess is that they
acquire retail licences (which are transferable) from systems which have
been scrapped. [They might actually be OEM licences which, technically,
are not transferable - but MS doesn't seem to care].

Roger

I bought my Windows 7 32 bit disc and sealed Key from eBay. I trust
them, and they have a user guarantee if there's an issue. I bought it 6
years ago keep in mind, but I'm still using it today. I'm sure someone
is still selling them on eBay.

Downloa a suitable torrent then check for anything amiss once it's
instlled. New install not not a big burden to check.

I've used a multi0-version diskfor years now and nothing has ever been
amiss, validated and syays that way also ...

Hi Paul,

I went to microsoft.com's Windows 7 download page.
After I entered the Product Key (double checked the entries) for my 64 bit
version and clicked on "Verify", an Error: "We encountered a problem
with your request......".

Note: I was not presented with the 64bit or 32bit (X86) choice yet.

OK, is this a COA sticker off the front of a Dell or Acer ?

Royalty OEM keys, don't work on the download page.

Things that might work:

1) You bought the OS retail, as boxed software and it came with a COA.
That license key would work.

2) You bought the System Builder version (that's what I did and what I
used to prove the download things works). The COA on that is workable.
Strictly speaking, you're "not supposed to build the system for yourself",
but hey... The System Builder product is intended for people who
whip up a few custom systems for customers. Some of these products
also had the dodge that "you had to buy hardware with it", so some
companies would accept an order for a mouse and a System Builder DVD as
a valid combination.

The Googlean evidence is that maybe your COA is a Royalty OEM one
and that's why they have to deliver a techie message, without
plain English translation.

I think I may have tried the key off my Win7 Acer, and that
didn't work. But the System Builder disc (that only came as x64,
so you have to download the x86 one if needed), that worked fine.
The Rufurb key off my Dell Refurb, I don't think that works either,
but I may not have tested that.

Is this practice stupid, or what ? Is it a good thing to force users
to find ISO files in dark alleys, and use those ?

Most of the download facilities use dynamic URLs which are only
valid for 24 hours. This is why nobody can give you such a link
out of their "notes file". The Heidoc program, which used to be
able to beat the key check and give you access to a Techbench
download, that no longer works, because (apparently) they
were using real keys, and after X downloads, the real keys
start being rejected.

It's pretty hard for people out here to give aid and assistance,
in the form of microsoft.com style links. There are people out
there with huge ISO collections, who will have a copy of yours
(likely snarfed from DigitalRiver while it was running). But unless
you have a SHA256 hash for a valid ISO, it's pretty difficult to
trust materials like that. The SHA256 for my <USA> disc might
not be exactly right on language settings for your purposes.

Summary: Hell will freeze over, before Microsoft will give you a copy :-)

Hi Paul,

I bought the Dell laptop with OS installed. Later, I called tech support
and requested the system disc as a backup. Note: I did NOT have
to "Activate" Windows 7 Home Premium on this laptop.

The System disc (backup) was for this specific model laptop.

Since I did not buy the OS directly, I assume this is why I got the
error.

Yes, the Dell COA will not work on the Microsoft
downloader page. You'd get the same response as I
got with my Acer COA sticker key, which is to
deny a download to you.

*******

Dell web site has some images. But, the image set is a "sparse matrix",
and the Heidoc tool does not list every permutation available.
Look in the Heidoc (EXE) right hand side menu bar, for a Dell entry.
(The "high functional requirements" are needed by Heidoc, when it
busts into Microsoft facilities that need things like ActiveX.)

https://www.heidoc.net/joomla/technology-science/microsoft/67-microsoft-windows-and-office-iso-download-tool

Download: Windows-ISO-Downloader.exe
Version: 8.46
Release Date: 8 January 2021
Requirements: Windows 7 or newer, .NET Framework 4.x, Internet Explorer 8 or newer.

The Heidoc tool, is the one that used to offer Techbench download
URLs for Windows 7. It used to be a reliable way to get a download
without entering a key, but Microsoft broke that, and that feature
no longer works. What Dell offers are machine-specific images,
which are SLIC activated Royalty OEM images. And these are only
useful to a Dell owner, and not likely to be perfect for
every user. You have to check the list of images though, to see
if your machine model is included. Not all Dell models are
in the list, making this into a "lottery".

With the Heidoc tool, if it locates a URL, you can click
the "copy URL to clipboard" button, and transfer the URL
to your favorite browser. For images larger than 4GB in size,
remember to save to an NTFS volume, not a FAT32 one that
will kill the download at the 4GB mark.

Summary: Odds are poor you're getting an image today,
and we're down to some of the last "legit" sources.
Next step, is lifting sofa cushions and looking under.

Paul

The above is rather ambiguous. AFAIAA, Dell only supply with their
laptops a driver CD/DVD, in my case called Drivers & Utilities, if you
want anything else, you have to contact them and ask for it, and the
only disks available from Dell for a given laptop are of just two or
three types: firstly the Drivers & Utilities CD/DVD for the installed OS
at purchase, but also possibly an OEM Microsoft OS CD/DVD for that OS or
a related one, &/or a Microsoft Office CD/DVD.

For example, when I first bought this Dell Inspiron that I'm typing this
on now, it had Windows 8 on it, but I was being driven mad continually
by the unwanted popups - ISTR that they're called 'charms', if so, a
misnomer worthy of 1984 double-speak if ever there was one - that
continually got in the way of whatever I was trying to do; it was like
being surrounded by an army of job's worth idiots, all saluting their
heads off but never actually helping you at all. Finally I contacted
Dell and demanded a W7 disk, and that is what is still installed now.

My point being that while I have still the original W8 Driver &
Utilities CD, and the W7 Home Premium DVD and W7 Driver & Utilities CD
they sent upon my request, I haven't got and don't recall ever having a
W8 OS CD supplied with the laptop.

So which disk were you describing up thread? Drivers & Utilities or OS?
If the latter, why the need to download the OS again?

Hi Dan,

No, I do not have a 32 bit version yet.

I would like to download that from your Dropbox after I receive
the Dropbox link from you via email. Note: I also have a Dropbox account.

My real email address (my "spare" email address), remove "ine" from the
one in my posts.

Please let me know (here) you sent me the link.

Thank You, John

Hi Dan,

This (above) is NOT a DropBox link because "dropbox.com", etc. is part of
the link.

I am surprised W/7 isn't in the same category as XP after they dropped
support. There didn't be any checking of the key at all and there was
certainly no hardware matching going on. I loaded 3 machines with the
same disk and key in one night. and they all passed.

I do have a W/7 Home upgrade disk and COA (retail) I can send someone
if they want it. I suppose you need a good XP to load it tho. I can
come up with an XP pro retail too tho. Will it load over W/3.1?

What, technology has died? Create an ISO and send it to you over the internet by one of several easy ways.

If they have an internet speed like mine, it might be preferable to mail
the disc. They might not have an easy way to burn it to a CD otherwise.

If you had a copy, I'd pay you to mail me one. I lost mine, and a few
parts of my install are corrupt several years later.

https://www.wincert.net/forum/topic/14040-important-announcement-iso-downloader-blocked-by-microsoft/

Win 7 Pro 32 bit

https://download.microsoft.com/download/C/0/6/C067D0CD-3785-4727-898E-60DC3120BB14/7601.24214.180801-1700.win7sp1_ldr_escrow_CLIENT_PROFESSIONAL_x86FRE_en-us.iso

This is apparently a disc with some updates already
applied to it. They tend to be larger than a regular
installer disc.

7601.24214.180801-1700.win7sp1_ldr_escrow_CLIENT_PROFESSIONAL_x64FRE_en-us.iso 5,898,725,376 bytes
7601.24214.180801-1700.win7sp1_ldr_escrow_CLIENT_PROFESSIONAL_x86FRE_en-us.iso 4,048,859,136 bytes

Why the word "escrow" is in the title, I haven't seen that explained.

The 64 bit one in the example, is unlikely to fit on
single layer DVD media. Probably a USB key would be
in order.

*******

In the W7/W8 era, there was a tool for making USB sticks.
But the rufus.ie tool likely works better. This one has
all sorts of tiny details. You will suffer hair loss,
before being successful with this one. Still, I've
used this quite a few times over the years (as it was
better than nothing). It's hard to say who wrote this,
likely not Microsoft.

"Windows 7 USB DVD Download Tool
(extracts from ISO9660 file and copies files to USB stick)"

If you don't have an optical drive, that's
an option. When you make sticks, they could be
legacy BIOS or UEFI/GPT, but not likely both at
once. Only the MediaCreationTool makes hybrids,
as far as I know. The Rufus.ie tool will offer
to make one or the other, but not a hybrid
(because Rufus repackages the materials, typically).

The escrow links above are probably long gone, but it's
one more in a string of long-gone items. Ones in the
"better than nothing" category.

To save anyone else who tends to download anything like this on a
belt-and-braces principle a big download (and load on the server): I
downloaded the Home Premium 32-bit .iso from the above page
(4,095,452,184 bytes), and it was identical (by "fc /b", not just by
hashes) to one I had downloaded 2019/8/14, I think using heidoc 816. I
don't know what that says about what updates it includes.

Hadrian's Wall has never been a border between Scotland and England. It lies
entirely within England but, when it was built in AD 122 by the Romans as a
defence against the raiding Picts, the future English were still in Germany
and the Scottish were still in Ireland.
