I can't speak for any other usenet fans but if I select ascending or
descending date as the sort order then I want the latest to be visible
without having to use the scroll-bars. It's the exact opposite that
seems to govern the headers window.

Rephrased: if I select descending date that means newest on top AND the
list auto-slewing to the top; if I select ascending date that means
newest at the bottom and the list auto-slewing to the bottom. Or are
devs interested in the oldest first?

Doesn't the sort order toggle from old-to-new to new-to-old if you click
the header for a column? Click once to get old-to-new sorting. Click
again to get new-to-old sorting.

Thanks, I didn't know about the double-click bit, maybe the default was
the wrong way for me.

No, it toggles ascending/descending. And the focus is often on the first
message.

For instance, I am looking at a post in the last thread, like this one.
I click on the tiny button at the header of the list of message to see
unthreaded, and the focus jumps to the first mail in the entire folder,
instead of staying put at the message I was reading.

In fact, the top panel goes to the first message, while the bottom panel
stays displaying the message I had.

I move the slider and click on the last message. Threaded view again,
focus goes almost to the end, not quite, I have to move the slider a bit.

Very old bug or behaviour.

If you watch close, you will see that the sort order only changes up or
down for the posts you can see on screen above the dividing line. If
there are more posts below the line, then yes you need to scroll them
up, or move the line down.
