So J9 and J14 are Ardent Tool are not documented for the Reply TurboBoard 60/65/80 and they aren't in the manual. I've been trying to figure out what they do by comparing against the PoweBoard and other Reply boards.

I can definitely confirm that J9, the three pin jumper is the bus clock. The pins aren't labeled so if you consider the top most pin, pin 1, then closing pins 1-2 is 33Mhz and pins 2-3 is 25Mhz.

This is screenshot of an 83Mhz Pentium OverDrive with it's bus clock running at 25Mhz with pins 2-3 shorted: https://imgur.com/a/fTrIegr

If anyone has any idea what J9 does, I'd like to know. Ardent Tool says "(audio related?)" but I don't know what that means. It's a 2 pin jumper and unshorting produces no noticeable affects.

I've been fiddling because I am having a hell of a time getting MIDI via the Adlib clone or the SnarkBarker to work on the Reply TurboBoard... almost sure there is a conflict with something, but I don't know how to determine what it is. In fact, when I run Speedsys with a SnarkBarker plugged in, it hangs on the address when it scans through the ports to determine system contents. Any ideas on how to further research this would be helpful and appreciated.

There is a section on Ardent Tool that I copied and pasted below about a possible base address conflict, but I am not able to figure out how to resolve it. You can't change that address on the sounds cards either.

https://ardent-tool.com/sound/Sound_Blaster.html#Passions_of_the_SBP_MCV
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Base Address Conflict

Some of the PS/2 systems may use the address range that conflict with the base addresses of the Sound Blaster Pro MCV. Should this happens on your system, please change the base address settings on your card.

Although our base address are set at 220H & 240H, the following addresses will be decoded. Please make sure that other cards do not make use of these addresses.

220 - 23F 240 - 25F 388 - 389
620 - 63F 640 - 65F 788 - 789
A20 - A37 A40 - A5F B88 - B89
E20 - E37 E40 - E5F F88 - F89

I keep forgetting that moving the card to another slot seems to help with MIDI, but I am not sure why. I do remember those days, but those brain cells have become mush as time marched on.

Step to the left, then a jump to the right, put your hands on your hips...

It is possumble that the system configuration is having trouble
assigning resources, and moving the Snarky card makes it configure
first, or at least, earlier.

Meditation on the fixed resources of the Snark and looking at the Reply
planar ADFs might reveal something. MIGHT.

My SWAG is a system board device is activated first, but the Snark uses

Does it (Snarky) [ab]use @70D7?

Thanks Lionel, I've updated the page with the J9 info.

"audio related" is just a guess based on its proximity to the PC speaker
amp. Maybe it adjusts the amplification level? Or perhaps it disconnects
the MCA AUDIO node? Dunno. Only way to find out I guess...

I don't have any experience with the PSETUP utility, but moving the
adapter around should have no effect on the result unless it conflicts
with some other card. What else is installed in the machine?

Maybe... disable the IDE controller, install SCSI, then try the Snark?

NamedItem Prompt "AT IDE Interface"
choice "Primary" pos[16]=1XXXXX11b io 1F0h-1F8h
choice "Secondary" pos[16]=1XXXXX01b io 170h-178h
choice "Disabled" pos[16]=1XXXXXX0b

Help
" The on-board AT IDE interface can be configured as Primary or
Secondary. If you select Primary, the interface will be accessed at port
addresses from 1F0H to 1F8H. If you select Secondary, the port
addresses will be from 170 to 178.

If you don't have AT IDE fixed disk, you can select Disabled to avoid
a conflict with other devices."

I don't see a conflict there.

May be an interrupt problem too. Sharing doesn't always work...

A complete list of the used hardware and shots of the "View
Configuration" page (or whatever its alternative is in the PSETUP
utility) would help.

Things look like there is a conflict with the Snark. The ADF is two
lines longer for fixed resources than the Ad Lib, but that's it.

Neither card lists any items at all, much less settings.

Disable parallel, serial, and IDE.

DS1385/DS1387 RAMified Real Time Clock 4K x 8

Huh, Model 90 has 8Kx8.

That is the point. Not sure of any resources.

Remove adapters, shut off non-essentials, get it to boot.

Try adding Snark, see what it wandts.

Hey guys, thanks for the info and content. Life got busy heading up to the holiday, but I have the next week off. The plan is to play with it and report back when I find. I managed to find a spock with 2MB and I'm going to disable onboard IDE, to play with that and some spare scsi drives I have kicking around, as well as other things.

The other thing I am trying to trace down when I play Doom is that there are periodic cuts in sound or loud static. Trying to find out if there is an interrupt conflict. Also, I had to replace DOS/4GW with DOS32A for Doom II to even work. See here for an example, minus the IRQ issues he had in the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4IASGSBgs7A&t=943s
Do the IBM SCSI adapters do IRQ sharing? I believe the onboard IDE does and Windows95 doesn't like it from what I gather on the newsgroup. Wonder if there's issues there with the snark too.

Interesting, thanks for the point in the right direction with the link! Right now with just the Snark and the Spock installed, and the onboard IDE, Serial, LPT1 all disabled, SpeedSys still locks up on ISA PnP port 223

This I want to try:
* I have an Adaptec card that I have and see if makes things more stable.
* I have another model 80, with a factory planar and hypertech 486 upgrade. I'll see if I get the same behavior (speedsys locking up and/or the weird sound cut outs/static with doom2, sb installer test failing for FM)
* No other cards but the snark installed, everything else removed or disabled. I'll boot dos from a floppy and try to run speedsys and see how things
* Test each interrupt

As a side note, I found that the 1MB modules that came with this SPOCK that I picked up on eBay or not compatible The card wouldn't see drives and threw errors. As soon as I put in 256KB modules it would pass diags and recognize drives. /sigh

ISA PnP port 223

I have dallied about, trying to figure out what, if any, benefits for
installing MCA system components. MCA PIC, system timer, a few others.
No discernible difference. Methinks they are merely stubs pointing to an
ISA PnP whatsit.

I've flittered about, trying [and failing] to understand WHAT
information a PNP file presents to a system. Epic FAIL!

hypertech 486 upgrade

Gung-ho! You can't wait to get it working with a 8580 and a 386, so slap
on a Hypertech! Add on some extra signal tomfoolery, what could go wrong?

MAJ Tom, searching the Tool for Hypertech results in ZERO, NADA, NO
hits. Why is that?

I misspelled it, goes by HyperTec and HyperRace: https://ardent-tool.com/CPU/8570_DX33_Upgrade.html

"Gung-ho! You can't wait to get it working with a 8580 and a 386, so slap
on a Hypertech! Add on some extra signal tomfoolery, what could go wrong?"

LOL, So the backstory on that... I picked up two 8580's about two years ago with HyperTech's in them for $50 total in Newburgh NY. A guy saved them from a dumpster and threw them on craigslist. These were the pics from the craigslist ad https://imgur.com/a/LTewJ8V I don't have the original 386 chips they came with, but I've thought about trying to find an original. Anyway the guy didn't know what he had, one of them had an audiovation in it..

So flash forward, the thread in this group: "Pretty sure I killed a 8580 20mhz planar" spelled the death of a planar in one of them. I'm still embarrassed about it, I never got it to run again. I really like the platform for nostalgic reasons and I ended up with a Reply TurboBoard with a nice modded Dallas chip from eBay that used to belong to Greg Frantz, you can search for his posts in this news group concerning this board. It was the last Reply Board to pop up on ebay and while it was steep, it came with the manual, everything I needed, a very nicely modded Dallas chip, 56MB of RAM, and POD 83mhz. Those are getting priced rather high these days now.
