Yes, I'm using a newer version of ubu, but
this could be autoreparable with a single line.

Am I wrong, as usual???

Maybe this is controlled by gsettings:
Run
gsettings list-recursively org.gnome.desktop.media-handling
to show the settings, post it here.

To enable it, run these commands
gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.media-handling automount 'true'
gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.media-handling automount-open 'true'
