Hello. I'm using SeaMonkey for newsgroups.
When I first entered a group I was prompted to download 500 headers,
which are only a small portion of what's saved on the newsgroup server
(in my case Eternal September).
I'm trying to search for something specific and I want to download more
messages, but I can't find a way to do so. If I didn't have much to lose
I would've simply unsubscribed and subscribe again to download more, but
right now I have downloaded the content for all ~6000 messages in the
group. If I unsubscribe from the group I'll have to download them again
and I would like to avoid that.
Is this feature available on SeaMonkey? Or perhaps some workaround?
Thanks.

Change the big number on the group you want to download more headers
from to a smaller number:
C:\Users\ABC\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\SeaMonkey\Profiles\x3zz4z89.default\News\news.eternal-september.org.rc

The OP is using Linux so the path will be somewhat different.
Independently of that, I'm trying to follow your instructions (under
Linux) and am not doung very well. For a start, there is no file in the
equivalent directory ending in ".rc" - the endings are .dat, .htm (for
some groups) and .msf - and neither seems appropriate.
I'd tend to unsubscribe and resubscribe, that's what I've done in the past.

Sort of like what 'Paul in Houston Tx' was suggested, when you see the
"Download 500 headers" (on the Edit -> Mail & Newsgroups Account
Settings -> Server Settings -> Ask me before downloading more than nnnn
messages), change the number to 50,000 or whatever. If there aren't that
many messages to download, it'll stop when it's downloaded them all, anyway.

ALTERNATIVELY, one of the other options, after downloading just some of
the message, is to "Mark other messages as Read". De-select that option
and then download, say, 500 messages followed by another 500 messages
followed by another 500 messages ...... until you've got the lot or
atleast the one you want.

If you do that, you are setting the default values for newsgroups on
that server (and you can also get there by right-clicking on the server
and then taking the bottom option, "Settings"). The OP wants to change
the value for a newsgroup he is already subscribed to.

"File" -> "Get Next 500 News Messages"

I think this will be slower and will appear to block SeaMonkey (at least
for larger amounts of messages?), but will eventually complete. I
haven't yet been able to investigate why is this apparently slower than
just downloading all the headers when first entering the group.

Not recently, Don, but I do recall doing it some time ago .... or was
that with Mozilla Suite.

I think this is a server/account-wide (not group) setting, it is stored
as mail.server.serverN.max_articles.

From the testing I did today, changing the value in the "Download
Headers" dialog box (the prompt that appears when that "limit" of new
posts is exceeded) changes the value shown in that box for other groups
on the same server, and the value shown in the mentioned server/account
setting in the interface, as well as the corresponding
mail.server.serverN.max_articles preference.
