Thunderbird 115.3.2

How do I increase the size of the message pane in Classic view beyond
what is allowed by the double-headed arrows?
I would gladly reduce the size of the barrier between that and the
message threads.

I know of no barrier between the message header and the threads pane.

If I open a newsgroup or trash on an email account that has quite a few messages, I can scroll the message header up
shrinking the treads pane to about an inch may 1.5 inches. The treads run right up to the header, there is nothing
between the last shown thread and the header.

I don't know, the minimum size of the message list pane doesn't feel too
large to me.

Have you tried Compact Headers addon?

It gives you a "twisty" to expand/contract the message pane header and
options on which fields to include, or to compress it to a single row.

Pardon by use of "barrier", Al. It was rather ill-chosen.
What I intended was the area that comes between the threads and message
pane. I still don't know what to call it but it has "Reply, Followup,
Forward, Archive ......." in rectangular boxes along its upper edge.

Does it still work with Tbird 115? If there is an install issue,
perhaps you could edit to enlarge the version range specified in the
install.rdf file inside the .xpi install archive file to include 115.

(Yeah, it's old, but perhaps still applies. Mozillazine stopped
updating their articles years ago.)

I just downloaded the .xpi file for this add-on, and extracted all files
from the .xpi archive file. I didn't see an install.rdf file. Instead
I found:

"strict_min_version": "102.0a1",

"strict_max_version": "106.0"

in the manifest.json file. If the add-on won't install, perhaps
changing the strict_max_version value would work.

I hadn't seen that page before, so it was interesting to compare the
'Classic View Layout with “Table” View', to what I currently use with my
TB102.

1. Spaces toolbar. Not used by me in 102, so hidden.
2. Unified toolbar. As I don't use the "Spaces toolbar", what use would
this be? I had a look through my current menu headings, but couldn't see
a "Ctrl-K". Is that "Search" some sort of universal sort through
messages, calendar, settings, etc? I tried "Ctrl-K", and a new page with
a search box appeared, but it didn't seem to do anything (perhaps
because I have the quick filter bar hidden?). Can the search box be
hidden or customised away?
3. Tab bar. I use this in 102.
4. Message List Header. Not present in 102; I can't see that I would
have any use for it.
5. Folder Pane. I use this in 102.
6. Quick Filter Bar. Not used by me in 102, so hidden.
7. Message List Pane. I use this in 102.
8. Message Header Pane. I use this in 102.
9. Message Pane. I use this in 102.
10. Today Pane. Not used by me in 102, so hidden (I have a separate tab
for the calendar.)
11. Status Bar. I use this in 102.

Looking through that list, I can't see any non-security imperative for
updating to 115. In fact, from other points (like losing vertical thread
markers, and possible loss of add-ons) it would be worse from a usage
point of view. I'll leave it for a month, then look at the situation again.

I hide it, I also use css to hide the button for it in the main toolbar
(if I want it, there's the icon in the status bar). Muscle memory for
me says the first few icons in the toolbar are "get", "write" and
"reply" ... quite rude of the spaces toolbar icon to insert itself at #1
in the list and not be customisable like normal icons

I don't see a search bar, I have a feeling this is dependant on cards view.

Mine hides when only one tab it open, which is most of the time here

Nor me, but hiding it also hides an options icon, which is apparently
the only way to switch into "cards" view, which I don't use, but it's
pretty bad GUI design to have options which depend on other options

I always have it enabled, use the "unread" button to filter between all
an unread, sometimes use the starred button, or search to/from/subject

'Customize toolbar' allows you to drag it off in 115. I don't have 102 anymore to test.
I've accepted 115 with my css to fix the things that should be (IMO).

If it had been "dragged off" then I'd expect that Customise... would
gave a search icon available to be dragged back, but it doesn't here.

Compact Headers 5.1 works fine with Thunderbird 115.3.2.

Compact Headers version 5.1 supports Thunderbird 115.
When visiting this page in a web browser it may show an older version.
If so, try installing Compact Headers from within Thunderbird, or check
Other Versions.
The add-on will be automatically upgraded when upgrading Thunderbird
from 102 to 115.
Some features had to be changed (removed) due to changes in Thunderbird 115.

After rereading the add-on page, the "Works with" showing 106 max does
not match the statement in the "About" section that says:

Compact Headers version 5.1 supports Thunderbird 115.

The author needs to update his version range in the add-on page if
indeed he has tested it on Tbird 115.

In the "Review" section, a user notes the add-on does not work their
instance of Tbird 115. Some report the add-ons works okay with 115.
Unclear the author actually tested compatibility with 115. But, if it
works for you, great.

APIs are frozen for sets of releases.

That is how you can make promises like that.

You would have to look at a diagram of which version
of Firefox was used to make your version of Thunderbird,
to see where this "pattern of frozen APIs" comes from.
It means that 117, is the last version of this group
of Thunderbirds to be using the same version of Firefox ESR.
The add-on tech must be based on a Firefox subsystem.
That's the conclusion you reach, when a developer
tells you this.

They're not saying things like this, to jerk your chain.

Andy seems to know where to find a page with the info
for that.

If Mozilla have planned so far ahead, why don't they incorporate this
functionality, rather than leave it to some add-on artist?
