Where I grew up there were a lot of winding mountain roads, many of them
dirt. Straight line performance took a back seat to handling.

It's okay, breaking into the mainstream with an analog synth
with a sequencer. But it's more about the new timbres than
any great shakes as a song.

Perhaps but in that case they lost the wrong one. 'Thistle' implies the
Scots and their caterwauling bagpipes. The local 'Celtic Dragon' bagpipe
band tries to play Irish tunes every now and then. One octave plus one is
somewhat limiting. Irish flutes / tin whistles are good for three octaves
plus they have both C and C# so they can play in both D and G keys.

I used to listen to Thistle and Shamrock also. It's been 25-30 years ago,
