As we discussed some time back, the Text Encoding submenu on the View
menu was removed in version 89. Repair Text Encoding, which does less,
was introduced in version 91.

Well, I encountered a messed up Web page with a line of characters that
couldn't be rendered correctly. Repair Text Encoding isn't there in
version 114.

I saved a version of the Web page locally and edited the character
encoding header myself. It couldn't be repaired. I changed from
US-ASCII, ISO-8859-1, Windows-1252, and UTF-8. My guess is that somebody
copied and pasted into the Web page editor from something else, which
introduced the error.

Yes yes, ISO-8859-1 is rendered as Windows-1252 anyway, which I think is
in the standard.

In a bit of weirdness, I noticed that the Title had an em dash in it
which rendered only when the character set was stated to be UTF-8. I
tried substituting an entity. Firefox didn't decode the entity.

Is this disallowed on Title?

I am running Firefox 114.0. 'Repair Text Encoding' _is_ there in
the 'View' pull-down menu, here.

'Repair Text Encoding' is greyed out (disabled) on _some_ pages and
available (enabled) on other pages. It appears to me that it may be
unavailable on pages which specify a text encoding, and available on
pages which do not. But either way, 'Repair Text Encoding' is clearly
present here in the 'View' menu.

greyed out and not useable.
