Well it all started with Thunderbird 115. I dont like the mew icon, so I
decided to use the old one.
But this led to a general discovery.
Mint Mate program launchers - no matter whether anything to do with
thunderbird *at all* refused to use the new icons when they were in the:
/usr/share/icons/hicolor/48x48/apps directory *or* the
/usr/local/share/icons/hicolor/48x48/apps diercorty

BUT *were* happy to use them if they were on the user desktop!
And were happy to use *any other* icon in those directories.

e.g. in
/usr/share/icons/hicolor/48x48/apps
we have

root@juliet:/usr/share/icons/hicolor/48x48/apps# ls -l *bird*
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 24077 Oct 6 13:56
Carlosjj-Mozilla-Thunderbird.256.png
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 36540 Oct 6 14:12 Tbird.png
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 3525 Sep 29 14:18 thunderbird.png
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 13690 Oct 6 14:13 Thunderbird.png

Only *thunderbird.png* is acceptable. All others simply are not
recongnised by the launcher

Yet all work *perfectly* when accessd from the desktop.

Using MINT with Cinnamon, no problem.

Logged in with a second user and MATE, also works.

Seen the new message threading activated by default? What were they
thinking activating this by default?

I am of the considered opinion that millennial software writes do not think.

Current computer specs give programmers way more leeway in terms of
optimization. Gone are the days of fitting everything into 1MB of ram..

Or back in the late 80s and early 80s, when 64 KB in home computers seemed
like abundance. Still 16 KB felt like luxury.

Oh, they think - but it doesn't go beyond "Oooohhh, shiny!"

As someone who started out fitting everything into 16K of RAM, all I can
conclude is that these people believe that abundance justifies waste.
Plus, of course, it provides an easy path to the forced upgrades which
are now so prevalent.

Today, to get an acceptable performance level RAM has to be at least
twice the size of the booted system. With current graphic Linux-versions
that means 4 GB.

What forced upgrades? I do not see any. Particularly not in the Linux world.

Gone are the days of writing a specification that is approved by the
putative users, too.

Indeed. All that processing and GPU power and then they all decide the

I don't care that its inefficient, I care that's its lazy. There is no
logic or convention to the UI, People put switches wherever they can fit
them in not where you would logically expect them

Those who want slavery should have the grace to name it by its proper
name. They must face the full meaning of that which they are advocating
or condoning; the full, exact, specific meaning of collectivism, of its
logical implications, of the principles upon which it is based, and of
the ultimate consequences to which these principles will lead. They must
face it, then decide whether this is what they want or not.

Well there are, unfortunately. If you want to run a certain piece of
software you may well find that it depends on later version of
libraries than your current installation.
