I use Kubuntu 23.03. I like to have a number of folder icons in two
columns, left and right. A week or so ago, my desktop got super wide,
so that the right hand column of icons went out of sight and I have
to scroll to see it. I moved it back, and pressed "Lock screen" after
a right click, but it keeps getting moved out of the picture.

What could be the reason for the desktop getting elongated, and how
do I stop that?

Only time I have had that happen to me, was when my monitor/TV got into
overscan mode.
So check the monitors settings before you break any software.

Alright, I'm assuming your monitor is 1280x720. Something probably set
your display to 1366x768 for some reason?

Run
xrandr --output LVDS-1 --mode 1280x720
to reset it to 1280x720

Same thing. The top lines now say

Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1280 x 720, maximum 8192 x 8192
LVDS-1 connected primary 1280x720+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis

1024x768 60.00
960x720 60.00
928x696 60.00

What is it telling me?

Not a lot apparently. Is your desktop still off the edge of the screen?
If it is, the the problem is not in your computers sofwtare, it is in
the monitor, as I suspected all along.

Sorry, I should have checked the man file. The + marks toe preferred
size and the * the actual one. That doesn't solve the problem but,
as our philosopher points out, it may be the monitor settings. I'll
try to find out how to change these.
