Even Ubuntu 22.04.1 is up to 6.5.0. I think the Fedora box has 6.8.5
waiting in the wings if I ever reboot. It's only been up for 63 days but
there have been quite a few kernel packages downloaded.

What kind of "troubles" are you experiencing?

In my extensive GNU/Linux experience, Nvidia has really gotten
their act together over the past couple of years year or so.
In the past, with each new kernel, there were bound to be problems
but not anymore.

My current systems:

Linux: 6.8.1

Nvidia: 550.67

FYI, the Nvidia binary blob is not a total "blob." It has
some open-source code that can be compiled by the user.

On Gentoo, the ultimate distro, it compiles and runs with no problems.

Perhaps your inferior, stinking distro is providing junk.

I would not be surprised.

I was working outside of the distribution, on my own, blazing my
own trail.

Something Furled Fart is unable to do with his Linux kernel.

He is a Gentoo "distro-lackey", which he admits above. Tsk, tsk.

I'm running 5.4.0 on this machine (Linux Mint 20.3, based on Ubuntu 20.04).
It works fine. By next April I'll have to update, as it will reach EOL.

Fedora is only up to 6.8.6. I feel deprived. In truth it's running 6.74.

I'm really surprised by that claim. Last time I checked it was very far
from that. And Ubuntu delayed its 24.04 because of the xz version. Are
you sure about that?

Red Hat and I parted ways after the infamous release where gcc could not
compile a kernel. 20-odd years later I rather like Fedora. It just took a
while...

The Fedora box downloaded 6.8.6 today. Fedora 40 will be released on the
23rd so I'll wait until then before I bother rebooting. It's actually
using 6.7.4 currently. I do have concerns about Plasma 6 and the complete
removal of X and QGIS but I have other machines to run that on.

I already posted where I got it from -- it was originally from
Linux Mint's lowlatency kernel, carried forward with "make oldconfig"
since then.

For a while I used "make localmodconfig", but then I ran into trouble when
I added libvirtd and friends. So I'm building a "kitchen sink" until I
get around to deciding what modules I want to have loaded in all cases.

I used to use Red Hat Linux, then Fedora Core, then Fedora...then
I realized Red Hat legal was exerting too much influence on the
allegedly "community" distribution...

They were taking ECC out of openssl. Not just failing to build it
in the SRPM, but actually actively taking the code of out of the library's
sources.

Meanwhile, a friend (who is also a linux instructor at the JC), had been
singing the praises of Mint. I had already felt the squeeze because
Fedora couldn't even play mp3's without the rpmfusion repo. So, I
jumped ship, and never looked back.

I couldn't do without X -- X forwarding with ssh is very handy in my
line of work. (For example, running virt-manager...)
