The topic wasn't mp3's, but how we use Linux.

I brought up pulseaudio's superior sound-routing capabilities.

Laughing boy turned it into a discussion of his mp3's.

I don't know about you, but I prefer flac. I usually use
either mplayer or vlc to play them.

Regarding sound routing, I'll give you another example besides
the one that laughing boy ignored: my setup used to have a large-format
monitor mounted on the wall for displaying art, and sometimes hockey games.

With pavucontrol from pulse, it's trivial to send the hockey game
audio to that monitor, and have Elite Dangerous Odyssey audio on
my main speakers. Win-win.

Sounds reasonable, as long as they configure it well, and take care to provide
the JACK compatibility API. It will be awhile before JACK goes away. Does JACK
still provide better latency and more protection against xruns?

Mint has pipewire available, but I'm not using it -- too new for me.

(Read: I haven't gone and looked at it yet.)

Actually -- hey! I'm pretty sure I asked in here a few weeks ago

How is it?

It's the default on Fedora, so I guess I have 'tried' pipewire to the
extent that my Bluetooth earbuds work.

Well, I tried it. Installed pipewire-pulse, rebooted, then
ran pavucontrol.[*]

Alas, it didn't show my devices.

Poked around a little and found WirePlumber, hoping that
was the app to replace pavucontrol. Apparently not.

So I removed pipewire-pulse and rebooted, and everything went back to
normal in pavucontrol.

I'll revisit it in the future, but initially, it's a bit
disappointing that it didn't "just work".

This was on Linux Mint 21.2.

[*] For those who don't know:

PAVUCONTROL(1) PAVUCONTROL(1)

NAME
pavucontrol - A volume control for the PulseAudio sound
server

SYNOPSIS
pavucontrol

DESCRIPTION
A simple volume control tool (mixer) for the PulseAudio
sound server. In contrast to classic mixer tools this
one allows you to control both the volume of hardware
devices and of each playback stream separately. It also
allows you to redirect a playback stream to another
output device without interrupting playback.

This guy tried Pipewire for a couple months, but then had to revert
to JACK + PulseAudio. This 12-minute video explains why:
