Mac OS 10.13.6

Current SM is 2.53.17.1, but this is NOT new to the release.

It always crashes when I do Compact Folders and I end up with that
"nstmp" Folder under the Trash folder.

No idea how long it takes before it crashes, as I always leave it
"going" and come back later to find it has crashed, (again).

Is this a known issue? Is there a fix?

Sounds like you have a problem with corruption in your Mail subfolder.
You are using a Mac and I have absolutely no idea about that platform.

Hi. I am running SeaMonkey 2.53.19b1 (W9Gs beta) on an M1 iMac and have
never experienced this bug. I would look to see if you have some
corrupted files in the email trash folder.

Indeed.

First confirm which folders/accounts (where the compact operation
crashes) are affected. You can compact folders individually for local
mail/news/RSS accounts for testing using the folder context menu, but
for IMAP accounts (POP too?) you have to select the account and select
File>Compact Folders, so testing the whole account.

Check (and repair as necessary) the file system and underlying disk
where the problem mail account is stored. Disk Utility is still the
thing, I suppose.

Then, as a platform-independent suggestion, I'd try exporting the
problem mail account, making a new profile, importing the account, then
compacting the account. If that succeeds, maybe export all mail from
your problem profile, make a new profile using the settings of the
problem profile (except for mail/news), then import the mail accounts.

No doubt this is all trickier than the high-level description above.

When I had a similar problem, it turned out to be a bad spot on my hard

I hadn't previously mentioned that the process was always on "compacting
folder TRASH" (in status bar) when I would give-up waiting, and leave
the room. (and crashed later)

I closed SM, and deleted all the sub folders of Trash in the Profile.

I then launched SM and did the context menu method suggested to ONLY
compact the Trash folder, and although it took about ten minutes, it
completed w/out crashing.

Hopefully WE have fixed it!

10 minutes is insane. What do you have as a "hard drive"? SSD or one
of those old rotating thingies? SSD should be really fast, and my old
rotating thingie also only takes around a second.

System Info shows APPLE HDD HTS541010A9E662 that is 1TB capacity

so that would be a spinny thing, I think.
