Hi all,

so I'm having this problem on an Arch Linux Laptop: xdm
fails to start when triggered by systemd during the boot
process.

However when I log in as root on tty1 I can start xdm
just fine. startx works as expected, and I can also start
xdm using "systemctl start xdm.service" manually

Xorg.0.log from the failed attempt looks like this:
https://ttm.sh/Bp5.txt

When started after login, and xdm starts properly
Xorg.0.log looks like this:
https://ttm.sh/BpG.txt

Any ideas?

lkh

Yes, I did. My question is, what causes those errors?

Because as I wrote, when started manually after boot has completed
X starts without errors.

Did you look at the xdm log? /var/log/xdm.log

I had that problem when I first started using MX Linux. The problem
was the Intel video driver wasn't being used. Once enabled the problem
went away.

For some reason the DRM, which creates /dev/dri/card0 when the video module
(amdgpu in this case) gets loaded is taking too long initializing the video card.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Direct_Rendering_Manager

See https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/AMDGPU

I'm not using arch linux and am not aware of anyone with this problem before,
so that's about all the help I can give.

That's the best explanation i've got so far. Thanks a lot!

On the #archlinux irc I got the suggestion to set up early kms to get the video card
up and running in time.

I wonder if I could delay starting xdm just for some seconds. Only I don't know how
to do that with systemd.

There's probably a better way, but one simple way to to copy the service
# cp /lib/systemd/system/xdm.service /etc/systemd/system/
(you may need to create the directory /etc/systemd/system first).
Edit /etc/systemd/system/xdm.service ...
Change the line ...
ExecStart=/usr/bin/xdm -nodaemon
to have ...
ExecStart="/usr/bin/sleep 1 && /usr/bin/xdm -nodaemon"

Then run "systemctl daemon-reload".

Increase the 1 to a larger number if that's still not enough.

Huh, no. DO NOT copy the service file.

Instead, use an override.

systemctl edit xdm.service

Then:

# Wait 30 seconds before the unit starts.
ExecStartPre=/bin/sleep 30

But this is a hack, the proper way is to find what service should start
before and add the dependency. It is a bug in your distribution.

Here is a description on how to delay a service at boot only:

https://sleeplessbeastie.eu/2022/04/04/how-to-delay-the-start-of-the-systemd-service/
