My computer died and I lost my Seamonkey profile including the Openwith
extension. I have revived an older profile but I cannot remember how I
got this extension working. I think I ran it through a conversion of
some sort.

There is a legacy version of the extension here, but I cannot find any
..xpi file to install it. How do I get it working?

Try this:
1 go to the code pull-down and select Download ZIP
2 edit the resulting zip archive to remove any files whose path matches
none of the lines in xpi.list
3 rename the archive as openwith.xpi.

I haven't seen that one -- as far as I'm aware, all the ongoing work for
OpenWith is happening in Thunderbird as MailExtensions. It's interesting
to see at least a suggestion of a legacy version, but I'm not finding
anything that's really actionable.

What you want is the last XUL version, 6.9.2, which you can find at
https://addons.thunderbird.net/seamonkey/downloads/file/1013890/type:attachment/open_with-6.9.2-tb.xpi

Notice the URL is at thunderbird.net/seamonkey . I happen to have this
link saved, and by my experience, it's nearly impossible to find by
searching.

My bad. 6.8.6 is the one I meant to link, as it's the last XUL version
(regardless of platform).

I have my AddOns Manager tweaked with the AMO Browsing for SeaMonkey
extension (which I find really useful), as it better allows me to browse
extensions by version.

However, in the display for OpenWith, I wasn't paying attention, and I
grabbed the link for 6.9.2 (which is the last one that reports "restart
required", but still reports that it's WebExtensions), and didn't scroll
down further to 6.8.6, which more clearly (at least in my display) that
it can be installed in Seamonkey.

You definitely want

The last working version I can get to work on Linux is:-
<https://addons.thunderbird.net/thunderbird/downloads/file/1012011/open_with-6.8.6-sm+tb.xpi>

I unsuccessfully tried to install the link

that NFN Smith offered, without success (incompatible with SeaMonkey).

That's the one thanks. I think I should copy this somewhere like Google

I downloaded to my SSD and tried to install it, but SM said "Open With
could not installed because it is not compatible with SeaMonkey
2.53.17.1." :(

It should be an included add-on in seamonkey itself! It would
be very hard to use seamonkey without an easy way to switch for
web pages seamonkey can't handle anymore.

I have hopes that the next Seamonkey release is going to be able to
handle more sites.
Don't forget the sites which specifically reject all browsers apart from
a selected few, and Seamonkey is not in that list. There's a pub around
the corner from me which shows that "change your browser" message on
their website. Idiots.

Never ascribe to malice that which can be adequately
explained by stupidity.
-- Hanlon's Razor

But Microsoft isn't stupid!
-- me

I'm running version 2.53.18 beta 1 pre. It handles some of these
sites a bit better than 2.53.17, and hasn't given me any trouble
otherwise.

There are a number of supposedly reputable web sites (e.g. Dropbox
and the provincial government) for which Seamonkey displays a blank
screen. I'm not sure whether that's due to a shortcoming in Seamonkey
that they exploit, or whether they're upset that my hosts file is
blocking a lot of bling. I'm using Steven Black's hosts file
(https://raw.githubusercontent.com/StevenBlack/hosts/master/hosts),
which points a lot of ad sites and Google junk to 0.0.0.0.

I try to be Google-free, although Google has other ideas.
I certainly don't use their mail servers or search engine;
DuckDuckGo (https://duckduckgo.com) works just fine for me.

There's a difference between what a site can't handle, and what a site
won't handle. For the former, the problem tends to be with scripting,
and a lot of it being sites that are being written for Chrome. Current
versions of Firefox can handle most of those sites, but I've seen a few
that are truly Chrome-only. That said, I know there have been a few
improvements in Seamonkey's handling capacities, but there are limits
with it being a trailing-edge package.

On the other hand, there are sites that won't handle Seamonkey, simply
because it's old. When that happens, it's generally that they're
running a script to check the User Agent string, and if the string
doesn't show a current enough version of Firefox, then they'll complain.
There are variants of how they do that -- sometimes, they're just
looking for an acceptable version of Firefox, sometimes, they'll
complain if the string includes "Seamonkey" along with Firefox. I've
found that with both Google and Youtube, they don't behave well with a
Seamonkey UA that shows both Firefox and Seamonkey, but where they do
much better if the UA shows just Firefox.

Although there are a couple of extensions that allow for on-the-fly UA
spoofing (and you can also set spoofing both globally and for individual
sites via use of general.useragent.override settings in about:config),
it is notable that several releases ago, Seamonkey's default UA string
was changed to show Firefox 91. Previously, it was Firefox 68, and
before that Firefox 60. That gets around many of the sites (although
perhaps not all) that complain just to complain.

By my experience, the sites that are most likely to complain about an
unsupported browser tend to be financial sites. Although the error
message presented may be worded in terms of browser capacity, I'm
convinced that that's primarily a technical support item. If they're
providing support for a browser, they want their reps to see *exactly*
the same version as the user is seeing, and if the user is seeing
something slightly different (e.g., a slightly older version), then they
don't want to take the time to figure out the differences.

However, if a site is using capacities that Seamonkey simply can't
handle correctly, no amount of spoofing is going to get around that.

I use seamonkey with javascript turned off, so my main use of Openwith
is to open in a browser with javascript turned on. This can be seamonkey
with a different profile. Using the Add option on Openwith you can
specify /usr/bin/seamonkey -ProfileManager -new-instance %s and then
select a profile with javascript enabled.

I do similar with NoScript, as I like the better capacity of
enabling/disabling on the fly.

Although I have multiple Seamonkey profiles, it never occurred to me to
specify in OpenWith, where I can get to a more-lightly tweaked profile
quickly, and I do want that on occasion. I actually have done that with
Firefox, and had multiple profiles simultaneously.

I'll have to make an adjustment to allow access to the extra Seamonkey
profile.

Thanks for pointing that out.

You are aware, aren't you, that you can change from one Profile to

That's not the same because it closes the existing profile.

You can go to about:profiles and start a new profile in addition to the
existing one, but it's nowhere near as convenient as using Openwith to
open a link too.

Yes, although I don't do it frequently, because I typically don't want
to close out my existing profile, especially for something that usually
quick. But it's a nice feature to have, and I wish that the capacity
was also in Firefox.

That said, I had forgotten about what's possible with about:profiles.

Sometimes, there is a reason to go through profiles sequentially, and
sometimes, there is a reason to have two profiles open in parallel, and
the use cases aren't the same.
