migrating from Mint Cinnamon 20 to 21 (fresh install) when deleting a
file from a network disk I get
cannot move file to trash,do you want to delete immediately ?

I think that Nemo can't write to "trash"

fstab it's exactely the same in 20 (where all it's OK) and 21 (where I
get the error)
//192.168.1.51/public /mnt/XXX cifs
credentials=/root/.smbcredentials,iocharset=utf8,nobrl,gid=MYSELF,uid=MYSELF,file_mode=0777,dir_mode=0777,_netdev,noperm,vers=1.0,x-systemd.after=network-online.target

Normally this happens when the file system has no trash or Linux
doesn't support the trash of the file system (IIRC this applies to
NTFS).

The same disk, with *exactly* the same fstab entry is ok (files are
moved to trash on delete) when I boot LM 20.
When I boot into LM 21 the files are deleted with no option to move them
to trash.
The user is the same on both LM.

Is gvfs-smb (or whatever LM calls it) installed?

Also compare the /etc/samba/smb.conf files from the two installs.

Note the gvfsd-smb and gvfsd-smb-browse.

In the install where it's working does it have the gvfsd-smb files?

I don't normally use either samba or a ~/.trash directory, except when I'm
testing them. When I delete a file I expect it to be gone as I started with
systems that did not have trash recovery. My first ibm pc ran dos 1.00, and
before that I was working mostly on IBM mainframes.

I've learned to be very scareful of delete and format and keep good backups
myself. :-)

Sometimes helps to install 'cifs-utils'. Lots of distros
do NOT install all the SMB related utilities and such by
default and even installing Samba client/server may not
include everything you might need.

Same here. I started with an HP 2116 minicomputer for the U.S. Army, and
my own first computer was an Atari 800. Neither had recoverable trash
that I recall, but then that Army service *was* 50 years ago.

Is perhaps the filesystem fat, exfat, or ntnfs?

Ah, I see in your fstab that it is cifs. You can not apply chown there.
Instead, change the fstab line.

Change "MYSELF" to an actual user and group that does exist in the local
system.

Try using the number (1000).

(just in case you forgot, you have to umount and mount to make the
change effective)

If that does nothing, then there must be something in the samba/cifs
config. If they are the same across the two systems, then there is
something different in the the defaults each version applies. But I know
very little about samba. Something about guest shares. You can post the
"/etc/samba/smb.conf" file here (from the server), maybe someone spots
the problem.
