When I click on the login prompt at the top right of gmx.com, nothing
happens, even in safe mode, I also tried in a private window, and a new
profile. I don't feel too confident at the moment though as I am
reviving an old laptop and I have installed Seamonkey from the OpenSUSE
15.5 repository. Can anyone see it working?

I'm guessing that GMX is using scripting that 2.53 doesn't handle
correctly. I just checked with 2.53.17.1 in Windows 10. Even if f I
disable NoScript, I'm not getting past the dialog at
https://www.gmx.com/consentpage . Somewhere in fiddling, I did get past
that, and I saw the same thing as you, where there is no response to
clicking on a login icon.

I think you're likely to have to use a different browser.

Unfortunately, the nature of Web 2.0 is such that a significant number
of sites are heavy on scripting and dynamic delivery of content, and
where the driver is what Google is doing with Chrome. Some sites
develop for Chrome only and don't care about anything else, even a few
that won't work with current versions of Firefox.

For us running on trailing-edge technology, that leaves with a growing
number of sites that Seamonkey can't handle.

I can see the problem you're seeing.
Luckily for me, https://www.gmx.net works the way it has for some time -
it complains a bit but still lets me log in.

Thanks, I have discovered it works on both midori and falkon which
surprised me, but midori is now gecko alpha and falkon is chromium based
I think, so not so suprising. Falkon seems to use a lot less memory than
chromium though so should be good on this laptop with only 2G RAM.

Strange things are happening with Seamonkey refusing to work with oauth2
yesterday, but not today, today though it was refusing to exit. I've
lost all my old tweaks with the PC which died.

Thanks, I tried it but could not prove I am human in German, not
surprisingly. I have learned though that the German for privacy centre is
privacy center. :)

The sites are (unsurprisingly) very similar, but the page structures
differ regarding the styling of the Login widget.

gmx.net has an inline login widget whose display depends on JS that
doesn't fail in SM while gmx.com has a pop-up login widget whose display
is broken by JS that does fail in SM. In both cases the widget is
present and functional regardless of JS; the gmx.net widget is hidden by
default and unhidden when JS is loaded, while the login widget at
gmx.com is unhidden by default, hidden when JS is loaded, and then can
be unhidden by pressing the login button (if it works).

More details & work-around ...

With build 20230917150518 (2.53.17.1), Linux/x86 and NoScript, I created
a gmx.com account and set it up for IMAP/SMTP.

I had to enable JS for gmx.com and s.uicdn.com to get the registration
page to display, and www.google.com (Captcha support) as well to
proceed; also, it wanted a valid mobile phone number for account
recovery, though I was able to replace it with an email address after
creating the account.

To enable IMAP I had to check a setting in the gmx.com webmail page.
This needed ui-portal.de JS.

After logging out, I disabled JS for the mentioned sites. Then I was
able to login: although the login button was disabled, typing the
username and Entering the password worked. Similar to gmx.net, I was
sent to a warning page (roughly, "gmx.com webmail needs JS; click here
for instructions on enabling JS; click there for reduced functionality
webmail client") and was able to open lightmailer.gmx.com and do email
stuff, though obviously much less easily than with the SM mailnews client.

With just gmx.com JS enabled, www.gmx.com shows a blurry home page
image, after redirecting to www.gmx.com/consentpage. After enabling
s.uicdn.com, the home page looks right but the login panel doesn't
appear when the login button is pressed. The JS contains syntax that SM
doesn't (yet) support:

> SyntaxError: import declarations may only appear at top level of a module index-081077ec.js:1:5265

Work-around: View>Use Style>None. Now the login fields are at the top of
the unstyled page, **and** the login is not disabled. Type username and
password, press login (or Enter). Then View>Use Style>Default (or
whatever you had before).

It may also be necessary to enable ui-portal.de JS for some account
management functions, as above.

With gmx.net, JS enabled for gmx.net and s.uicdn.com gives a
"Reduzierte" home page with a Subscribe ("anlegen") button but no Login.

At www.gmx.net/mail (linked as "Email and cloud" in the page above)
there is a login button that just reloads the home page.

After enabling JS for js.ui-portal.de, the gmx.net home page shows an
inline login panel above the news stories.
