TL;DR:

Is there some way to get alcohol extract out of ground spice that's
turned into slime?

Verbose:

I like to make my own no-bake pumpkin pies (pudding and pumpkin and
spices) and pumpkin cheesecake, and have made cooked pumpkin pies from
scratch (if you count using the pumpkin in a can.) One problem I have is
that the pumpkin pie spice always seems to make them taste like dirt to
me, and even just ground cinnamon in other things.

So I saw pumpkin pie extract was available, though a bit on the
expensive side, but the ground spice is pretty cheap comparatively. I
looked up how to make it and it seemed simple enough, put some of the
spices in a jar with some alcohol and shake occasionally for a couple
weeks.

I put about 4 rounded tps in a small jar mason jar I think was about a
cup. That was about 1/4 of the jar. I then filled it up halfway with
tequila shook it each day. After about a week I was curious and opened
it up. I used a tiny amount in my coffee (I often shake a dash of
pumpkin spice in my coffee.) It tasted fine, better than the usual dry
stuff, however I noticed it had a very weird consistency. I'd say it
was slime-like, it stuck together and tended to pull off the spoon when
lifting it. I also noticed even though I had shook it for a day it
hadn't settled at all. I filled up the jar almost to the top with
Tequila hoping I just needed more alcohol and shook it again. That
hasn't settled at all either.

I'm assuming the spices absorbed all the alcohol and expanded. Or
perhaps there's cornstarch in them to help make them more shelf stable,
which would explain why it turned into slime. It's not listed on the
ingredients though.

Is there some way to get the extract out of this slime and usable?

If it's impossible, I'd still be happy to use it in my coffee so it's
not a waste. I could try some in a pie and see if that helps with the
dirt flavor without doing that I guess.

not sure this is the right group for that question...

Yes, I had trouble getting it to post and somehow ended up here instead
of the intended group rec.food.cooking which I recently joined, is very
active and reminds me of the good old days of a bunch of crazies talking
random shit in addition to talking about the newsgroup subject.

Am I too far afield for CSIPGA? :D

I do cook a bit. Breakfast most days and probably dinners about 3 times
a week for the family.

I'm perfectly fine with the question. As you say, it hearkens back to
the olden times, when these sort of asides were more common (although
given the amount of traffic in the group back then, these diversions
were still only a tiny percentage of the total posts)

I mean, don't expect an answer from here... but ask anyway. You never
know what somebody else might be an expert in.

Myself, I tend to avoid slime-like food ingredients, so I'm unable to
be of assistance. ;-)

Considering other things we talk about probably not. Anyway being from
the UK pumpkins aren't really a thing, and certainly not pumpkin in a
can, except for Halloween and we still don't eat them. Strangely Butter
Nut squashes are freely available all year round.

My guess though would be similar to yours in that there's something else
besides just the spices. Did you use whole spices or ones that were
already ground up as I'm guessing that for the latter it's quite
possibly some sort anti-caking agent is in with them?

Well, only if you expect an actual answer.
I like cooking and enjoy doing it, but I read your question and was
completely baffled how to answer that.

Already ground up.

Butternut tastes better to me actually but fairly similar, at least if
you just cook it and spice it without pumpkin pie spices. I'm not sure
how it would taste with pumpkin pie spice. I've started seeing sweet
potato pie replacing pumpkin here, and that's even worse, though maybe
if it's maple flavored instead it'd be better.

I've been leaving it alone and it's starting to separate a bit, though
only down to the halfway mark where I added the 2nd round of tequila
(also probably a poor choice for spirits for that, but it's what I had,
either something flavorless or rum or bourbon would be better.)

I'd run it through a coffee filter, then dry the residue in a very low oven with the door propped

Thanks, I've just been leaving it alone and it has finally started to
settle fairly well, the actual spice part is down to about 1/3 of the
jar. It was about 1/4th when it was dry so that's not too bad. I'll
probably give it another week or however long it is until I have a
craving for pumpkin spice. I just panicked.

Sadly no one answered my post in rec.food.cooking even though they're
about 10x more busy, though probably 9/10ths of it is calling each other
names, politics and dick jokes, etc. In other words, Usenet as I used to
know it.

Spalls has been here since at least 2000 by looking through the archive,
wouldn't surprise me if it were earlier, and he's been here ever since
except for a (year?) long hiatus a year or so ago.

My first post in rec.games.frp.dnd was 1997 (under my legal name.) I
joined this group much later, I used to frequent
comp.sys.ibm.pc.games.rpg before .action, but that's been mostly dead
for a long time. I was on Fidonet before Usenet for a couple years at
least through a local BBS.

I never left Usenet since 1997, though I didn't post much for quite
awhile because of csipgr and rgfd being mostly dead and hadn't
discovered csipga yet.
