It just occured to me that we haven't done a CRAP (Completely Random &
Pointless) Poll this month. Of course, that makes us wonder: do we
actually /need/ a new CRAP Poll every month? What if I were to run an
/old/ CRAP Poll? Or just none whatsoever? And, seeing as we are just a
few days from the start of a new month, is it too late to do one now
and should I just wait a week? Or maybe I should stop rambling and
just get to the CRAP Poll finally? Questions, questions, questions!

-----------------------

Congratulations! You own a computer and are just about to play a game.
You've got the PC, the monitor, the mouse, the keyboard... but do you
have speakers? More to the point of this poll, what SORT of speakers?

1) A custom, high-end, room-filling, Dolby Surround
Sound system. With more speakers around me than most
people have fingers. Probably with $1000 gold-wire
cabling too. Only the best for my ears!

2) A good set of 7.1 or 5.1 speakers.

3) Your usual 2-speaker system, maybe not the best
but still sounding good

4) The cheapest 2-speaker system you can plug into a
3.5" jack

5) The sound comes from my TV

6) Like 5, except I have a sound-bar attached

7) Whatever it is my laptop uses

8) I'm using headphones

9) I'm still using that tiny 1-bit piezo-electric beeper
on my motherboard

10) I output the sound to a graph and interpret the
audio visually. ;-)

11) I'm deaf, so either I don't have any speakers or -
if I do - only my neighbors could tell you.

-----------------------

Me, I'm currently at option #2, having switched to a Logitech 5.1
system some years back. It's not the best sound quality(especially
given the poor placement of speakers) but it gives some nice surround
and the subwoofer is powerful enough to annoy the neighbors, so I'm
satisfied. Years back I used to have a proper 7.1 hooked into a really
nice stereo system, but had to give it up due to space requirements.

And - of course - that's only what I use on my primary PC. My 'backup'
uses HDMI to output to the TV's (rather tinny) speakers, and my older
Win98 computer has some really PC speakers plugged into it. But those
get such limited use that they really don't count.

What's on your computer?

I use headphones probably 99% of the time, too many people; Jabra 30
II's that plug into USB. They sound pretty good, positional audio seems
pretty good as well. They have a mic (not that I use it for any gaming,
though have for online D&D in the past.) It has it's own driver, it
doesn't appear to use the realtech on mb audio.

I at one point had Yamaha computer speakers and an Altech-Lancing
subwoofer. The Yamaha speakers were very good sounding to me, but I
misplaced the power supply a couple moves ago, I'm 90% sure I have them
in some box I keep thinking I'll find eventually.

The subwoofer died, and I didn't really like the super-bass anyway so
didn't even think about replacing it.

I have some cheap (less than $20) powered computer speakers I bought for
my son at one point which got waterfalled down to me. Those really only
get used if I want to show someone a youtube video or we're playing a
split-screen game which isn't often. They're noticeably worse than the
Yamahas or headphones, but they're fine for my limited needs.

He mostly uses headphones too. I bought him some $100 ones that were
supposed to be pretty good and had noise limits, but they have
batteries, and can't be used directly plugged in to the computer if they
aren't charged, or used while charging, which I didn't realize when I
bought them, but I couldn't find anything else remotely close with good
quality and noise limiters.

Klipsch Promedia 2.1 for general use from my gaming / general purpose
PC.

Keep in mind this is unrelated to my music production setup which is
in a separate room.. but I will say I've made substantial purchases of
studio gear based on judgements I made listening to them over these
speakers (and that's even with Youtube's shitty audio compression),
and I've never been disappointed or had things turn out differently
than my ears + these speakers led me to believe, so that's actually a
decent statement about their ability to faithfully reproduce sounds
(at least musical ones). They're great for gaming too, couldn't ask
for more really. I would never use them for any form of music
production... I have "real" reference monitors (speakers) in the
studio which are properly amped and such. Good reference monitors are
different in the sense that they aren't designed to sound as good as
possible at all times, they're designed to sound as honest as possible
and reveal any flaws in the mix.

Then I have a bunch of different pairs of headphones that also get
studio use but not gaming. There are some games I occasionally play
(particularly battle royale shooters like COD Warzone and PUBG) where
you benefit GREATLY from being able to detect which direction distant
sniper fire is coming from, on VERY short notice :).... yeah, so that
can often make the difference in a battle royale game between ending
the round in 20th place versus winning or being in the top 3. In that
case I just use a pair of wired earbuds with a 3.5mm extender cable on
them. They aren't expensive earbuds, I think maybe $15-ish on Amazon
but they sound great, even bass response. For single player games or
even MP games where the positional sound isn't as critical, I'd rather
just hear everything over the Klipsch setup.

Computer games have sound?!?!?!

:P

I'm using the same five speaker system I've had for, um, I don't know
how many years. So #2. Except when its #8.

Over the years it has varied from headphones to cheapass 2 speakers, to
a 5.1 surround system, which I still sort of have except bastardized
since the old stereo I use to listen to the radio on lost a speaker
channel, so now the headphone jack is connected to the input, through a
couple of the original 5.1 satellite speakers, while mp3s/gaming sounds
are routed through the speakers from that shelf stereo 4watt/3ohm
jobbies, but better sounding than purpose built computer speakers.

The new computer just has one of those soundbars.

So I have a soundbar dead in front of me under the hutch (which is the
top cover of an old desktop 286, with 2 speakers on the sides of said
hutch that the radio plays through, and the shelf stereo speakers on
either side of me at the edges of the desk for music playback when I
fire up the mp3s.
The hutch is a, to raise the monitor to a more comfortable viewing
position and b has storage space under it, maximizing the utility of the
desk.

The surround sound system I bought was logitech, and I think getting on
for 15-20 years old now.

Originally it was truly surround sound, since I had 2 speakers in front
of me, and 2 duct taped to the top of the executive type office chair I
used to use (base broke so not usable now.)

Frankly in games, I do not miss the surround at all, it really makes no
difference.

TV/movies I watch with headphones, since I live in an apt and sometime
need to have the volume up in order to hear dialog and don't wish to
disturb the neighbors.

I wish. In a dedicated sound proofed room too. Of course, for a
reasonable setup you'd need at least three such rooms, one for movies,
one for music, one for gaming...

> 3) Your usual 2-speaker system, maybe not the best
> but still sounding good

This. Fairly ancient active studio monitors from M-Audio. Can't remember
the model now but definitely out of production and they are from the 90s
or early noughties. Connected to a preamp to which my PC connects via
toslink.

> 5) The sound comes from my TV

I have a vague feeling one of my monitors has built in speakers. I've
never used those.

> 8) I'm using headphones

Sometimes but not in recent years for gaming. The benefit of living in a
house instead of an apartment... And also I guess I've got old and lost
the taste for cranking up the sounds for gaming. I've sometimes wondered
what my neighbors thought about my old subwoofer when I still lived in
an apartment. It wasn't a very good subwoofer for music but for adding
some kick to explosions and other game sounds it was just fine.

> 9) I'm still using that tiny 1-bit piezo-electric beeper

Do they still put those on motherboards? I just had to check, I only
have a header. A possible CRAP poll topic for the future?-) Maybe a
little too simple and technical.

Only when digitizing vinyls to set the volume level.

This one for me. But they are good stereo speakers at least.

An ok(ish) 2.1 set which does the job for me. Sound is never something
I've found overly important in games and yes if I got a better set-up
I'm sure I'd notice the difference but I'm also sure I'd quickly get
used to it and it wouldn't enhance my overall game experience.

The subwoofer makes a big difference.

We'll call it #2.5?

I understood that reference. ;-)

Also, I apparently vote for option 2, if my intro is anything to go
by. ;-)

Gotta love the subwoofer. It makes me all tingly.

I just wish I could utilize it to its full capacity... but I'm trying
not to annoy the neighbors TOO much.
