I backup my 3 ubuntu machines every week to my NAS server.
Now I wanted to restore a backup from last week due to a minor problem a
program was having.
I opened up the backups tool and selected Restore, but when I chose the
date to restore from, no files were showing in the restore window, so I
tried other dates but again no files were showing.
I then checked my NAS server tosee if there were any backup files, and
there were, so why does the restore tool not see them.

How does the tool store the "address" of the NAS ?

Do you use DHCP ?

My DHCP here is quite stable, and the machine I'm typing
on has had the same IP address for years. This means, even
if the router power is cycled, it still figures it all out.

You could watch, using Wireshark, and see where the
client tries to reach during the restore.

Normally, this is why OSes have nameserving systems,
so that IP addresses are not used for identification, and
a symbolic address is translated to the correct IP address
on the fly.

Alternately, you could assign a static address, outside the
normal DHCP range, to the NAS box. Then, if you made a backup
five years ago, the address is static and exactly the same today.

Summary: You need to identify how the NAS is mounted or identified,
and make sure the identification method is bulletproof.
A wireshark trace, may show errant references to "nothing".
To IP addresses that don't exist.

And to be honest, computers really suck at this stuff.

Just a guess,
Paul

Both the NAS and the computer I wanted to restore a backup to both have
static ip addresses.

The backup works fine and shows up un the NAS.
Strangley tho' it is only 1 machine which exhibits this behaviour.
2 other machines see the backup files.

You quite literally provide no relevant information.
Don't mention which OS version(s).
Don't say what your NAS server is or what protocol(s) it serves/shares.
Don't even mention what program you're using to backup or restore.
Yet we're supposed to help?

Ok, on 3 machines there is Ubuntu 20.04.2
On my NAS it os TrueNAS 12.0-U4, I have 1 pool just for backups for all
3 machines

The program I am using is the Deja Dup 40.7 Backup tool

On 2 machines , when I open the said backupm tool, it shows a menu down
the left hand side, but on the 3rd machine, there is no menu. It shows 2
tabs on the top saying Overview and Restore.

The Backup/Restore works just fine on the 2 machines which show a menu,
because I have restored backups from my NAS server to the said machines.

Oooookay, and how is your client accessing the NAS in Deja Dup? As a
samba share (I bet), or nfs? If the former can you see the shared
directory as defined in Deja Dup setup in nautilus? If not, then you've
mucked your samba settings again.

When I select 'preferences' in the backup tool I get a separate window
up which shoos some basic information like Location, how long to keep
backups for and schedule. Then when I click on location , another window
comes up with 'Storage Location', 'Network Location' which is by samba,
and then which folder to backup.
Yes I can see the shared directory as defined in Deja Dup setup in Nautilus

Well in Nautilus do you see anything there? If not time to filter your
system log for deja errors

Yes, I can see all the backup files from the said machine, and the
latest ones being 13/07/2021

I changed the backup location from my NAS server to Google drive. The
backup was made without error or complaint, then when I tried the
Restore option, no files were showing.

So, the backup tool backs up the files to a location I choose, but after
doing so, it can't see the files in it's restore function!!!

Is it time to chose another backup tool.

Are the files owned by your account ?

For example, my backup set are owned by "bullwinkle" 600.

197,584 duplicity-full-signatures.20210715T172925Z.sigtar.gz
14,263 duplicity-full.20210715T172925Z.manifest
5,901,215 duplicity-full.20210715T172925Z.vol1.difftar.gz

That's because, on purpose, I started deja-dup without using sudo.
To see what kind of trouble it could get into.

Yes the files are owned by my account if you mean on Google Drive.
It was also the same when I backed them up to my NAS server.

Also the files are owned and created by Me on the said ubuntu machine

That was going to be my next guess. Easily fix with
sudo chown -R USER:USER /WHATEVER/PATH/TO/BACKUP/IS/*

But I don't use Deja, I have my own system.

Ok, thanks, I'll do that, but on the 2 other machines it just works fine
both ways.
