Works for me:
defined the PPA as shown in https://github.com/kelebek333/rtl8188fu

n.b. Driver must be re-installed after any kernel upgrade

Not working. Arrived today, first tried PPA installation mentioned
above, nothing, uninstalled and then tried installing from the first
answer here:

https://askubuntu.com/questions/1170202/how-to-install-rtl8188eus-driver-on-ubuntu-18-04

inxi -Nn only shows my wired network card, no USB device

lsusb shows Bus 009 Device 002: ID 0bda:b812 Realtek Semiconductor Corp.

Don't know if that's the device or not. Before I send back, any more
suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Ok, the included CD actually has Ubuntu drivers: rtl8821au. So, the
instructions above are installing a different driver. How would I
install this one?

0bda:b812 is RTL8812BU

Seems like inxi ought to see it even if you don't have the driver yet.
Try remove and replug or different USB if there is one.

There are several places that fastoe talks about that driver, here's github

https://github.com/fastoe/RTL8812BU

Here's his site:

What worked for me was *rtl8188fu*

to check:
$ lsusb
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0003 Linux Foundation 3.0 root hub
Bus 001 Device 049: ID 0bda:f179 Realtek Semiconductor Corp. <-- relevant line
Bus 001 Device 007: ID 1a40:0101 Terminus Technology Inc. Hub
....
Then google "0bda:f179" or whatever ID you see, to find the chipset your adapter contains
In my case it was rtl8188fu (0bda would appear to point to "Realtek")

Details, please, and whether or not this works for Ubuntu. I may go
this route since the USB Wifi I'm currently trying I am unable to get to
work correctly.

I've used Odroid USB WiFi adapters on an Odroid SBC, and also on a
PC. Both were running Linux.

Looks good on the surface, but there are questions like whether or not
it is plug and play or does it have to be installed, will it work with
18.04? When I check out one of the US distributors, they are not an
easy, free return if it doesn't work out unfortunately.

Thanks, well running a check on the chipsets for those USB devices, that
site recommends: "Do not buy adapters based on this chipset. Better
options are available. You will likely be happier in the long run with
an adapter that uses the mt7610u chipset."

Guess that answers the questions.
