Any good NNTP reader recommendations for offline usage after initial sync?

You can use Claws Mail, it supports an offline mode where no
connections are made and you can download articles to read them offline.

Claws Mail doesn't seem well suited for this purpose. I check for new messages, right click on the group and click Download messages, it seems to do something. Once finished I disconnect from the internet and attempt to read the mails offline and get

>Claws Mail needs network access in order to access the News server.

I try to do this multiple times in the hope that it works but I still get the same issue. Maybe it has something to do with using it together with I2P (low bandwidth, high latency) that messes it up.

Looks like this is called nntp-pull on Debian and is part of the sinntp package.

Maybe use leafnode https://sourceforge.net/projects/leafnode/

That way you can still use any nntp client as leafnode just stores the articles
locally and serves them.

Did you check File > Offline Mode in the top menu? It might be in
offline mode when you try to check, and claws-mail does not warn about
this.

You might also check Tools > Network Log for problems.

This may have been the issue as I probably clicked that little connection icon in the bottom right corner.

I'm also getting the following in my logs when I try to open some of the messages.

>[2023-05-xx xx:xx:xx] NNTP> ARTICLE XXXX
>[2023-05-xx xx:xx:xx] NNTP< 423 No such article number XXXX

So some articles are simply missing.
