Hi:

I have several devices on my router, and, the router just assigns them an address when the do a dhcp request.

My PC where I'm running Synchronet also gets assigned its address via dhcp.

Most of the time, it doesn't change, but, today, it just changed and I had to go into my port forwarding and change all the internal addresses.

Is there a way I can keep the router from changing my address? I know it is possible to use a static ip in some cases, but, this machine is the only one I care about its address staying the same.

Any thoughts?

Thanks!

The DHCP server in your router should support address reservation. That's where you permanently tie a MAC address (of your PC's network interface) to a specific private IP address. Your PC will still think it's a dynamic IP address (using DHCP), but it will *always* (and forever, or at least, until you replace or reconfigure your router) get the same IP address.

if you're talking about assigning a permanent IP addy for an internal ip address, you can do that via your OS.

Yes, how depends on the router. Somewhere in the configuration pages,
there's a setting for DHCP reservations. These take a MAC address (the
hardware address of the card) and always assign a specific address to
it. That's the simplest way to ensure the address doesn't change.

The other way is to use a static IP on the BBS PC. Just make sure the
pool of DHCP addresses on the router doesn't include the static IP you
choose. You'll also need to know your gateway IP address (the router's
IP address), IP netmask and DNS servers. This is information you'd get
from DHCP.

.... Everyone's an atheist until it's time for a BIOS update.
