That's what I interpreted it as. I remember some early LCD TVs being 720p (1280x720). And I'm not sure if there were older ones that had lower resolution than that..

That depends on a person's technology. If you have a BluRay player, then it's
okay if it's only released on BluRay or only released on DVD, aside from the
drastic loss of video quality for DVDs. However, if you have a DVD player, then
BluRays do you no good at all.

With the ubiquity of inexpensive BluRay players, though, that's a problem that
is resolving itself.

I would argue that the second major format wars (the first behing VHS vs. Betamax, with Betamax being technically superior and unfortunately the loser) resulted in a pretty conclusive victory for the technically superior Blu-Ray over the craven proprietary HD-DVD format from Microsoft. Sony's triumph was pretty much complete by the mid 2000s.

That said, I would agree that if you haven't already invested in optical appliances, you've probably already missed the boat on 1080p and even 4K discs. And there's really no reason for this. You can invest in the digital format, and just skip optical media altogether. And this need not be streaming; you can download, save to cheap disk storage, and just watch on demand and push out to your devices using a super cheap "smart" video dongle like Fire TV or Google TV, or my preference, an Apple TV system.

HD-DVD was mainly developed by Toshiba, I thought.. Microsoft just happened to support HD-DVD on their X-Box 360 by including the ability to play HD-DVD movies.

You are somewhat correct. Toshiba was the chair of the HD-DVD Consortium, which also included 72 other companies, including Memory-Tec, NEC, Microsoft, and Sanyo.

That said, it's good that Blu-Ray won the format wars. Sony created a superior format in every way. HD-DVD could support a maximum of 30GB of data, whereas Blu-Ray supported over 50GB. The maximum bitrate of both formats is substantially different, as well, with HD-DVD capping out at around 29-35 Mbit/s, and Blu-Ray supporting between 40 and 53 Mbit/s.

The world is a better place because Blu-Ray won the format wars. But optical storage is now, largely, unnecessary given the ubiquity of fiber optic home internet service.

Yeah, I remember reading about that. I agree it's good that blu-ray won that format war.

I'm not sure I'd call optical formats unnecessary.. You can't always rely on your internet always working 100%, and same for a streaming service. Streaming services randomly pull content from their services too, so you can't even rely on something always being available to watch there. Those are a few of the reasons I still like to buy movies on physical formats.

In theory, yes. But there is another "largely" that doesn't
have the privilege of accessing fiber or other high-speed
internet in their homes. :/

The idea that everybody has fibre and therefore DVDs are not needed is very first worlder.

It takes me hours to download a Linux or BSD iso image from home. Meanwhile, picking a DVD I got from Linux
Magazine takes virtually no time.

You're preaching to the chior. I agree.
What sucks is, the majority of people not buying optical media as much as they used to means that optical media isn't produced nearly as much as it used to be. There have been a couple movies released on 4K blu-ray that seem to be available in other countries but not where I live (I've purchased a couple from Amazon that were shipped from the UK).
Also, some stores in my area have completely removed their DVD and blu-ray movie shelves.
Although I do have high-speed internet, I don't want to rely on streaming services all the time to watch movies.

MR> why dont you? arent movies just a waste of physical space if they
MR> are on dvds?

The reasons have already been given. Are you not paying attention, or
what?

Since you're slow to understand, I'll repeat some of them for you:

1. The streaming service might pull (for many reasons) a title from
their inventory that you want to watch.

2. Your internet connection may be down for whatever reason.

3. Many older and specialty/niche films are not offered by streaming
service.

Here's a perfect real-world example: For those of us who live in
"hurricane country", we sometimes have power losses which last for
hours, days, and even a couple of weeks. Things get pretty boring
sitting around a house with no power (OR INTERNET). But.... assuming
one has a generator, you can power up a TV and a Blu-ray player, and
watch a fuckin movie that you have on disk.

You understand now, dummy?

.... Some days you're the hammer, and some days you're the nail.

Online streaming services occasionally have problems (sometimes too many people watching, occasional buffering, etc.), and sometimes (though rarely) my own internet service might have issues.

Also, blu-ray offers a lot better video and audio quality than online streaming (which tends to compress things a lot).

For many years, I never heard anyone complain that DVDs are a "waste of space". I suppose people could say the same about books if they wanted to..

It's probably not so much first worlder than it is metropolitan
focused (ie making the assumption that everyone has the same
access to high-speed internet everywhere). Although.. a
ubiquitous satellite-based system could make it so.

We are too. I went through all the trouble of getting an HDTV antenna mounted on the roof with an HDHomeRun to record OTA content (for my "Plex DVR"), but nobody here ever watched any of the live or recorded content. If we want to watch something that was on OTA/network TV (e.g. SNL), we end up streaming it from some service anyway.

I still have all the CDs and DVDs, but have stopped accumulating. Yeah, there is a weird human instinct to hold on to things that have no obvious/immediate use any longer and I'm sure eventually they'll get donated or trashed. But man, the $$$ we spent on those discs is pretty baffling.

MR> we are 100% streaming at this house. youtube, netflix, slingtv with all
MR> that stuff. it's working out great.

Do you ever run into a problem with pulled content though? I've had times where I was watching a TV show that was included with the streaming service and then suddenly pulled it or started charging extra to "rent" or buy the episodes if I wanted to keep watching it.

MR> do you have that thing where you have an attachment to physical items?
MR> i tossed all my dvds and cds out.

I don't know what that is.. I just think it's more reliable to have my own copy of something. I don't think I'm attached to the things - I could also keep a copy of that stuff on a hard drive somewhere or on my Plex media server and I'd be happy with that.

Some of those shows on OTA TV, I'm not sure is available elsewhere. Sometimes I like to watch Jeopardy, Family Feud, local news, etc., which is available on OTA, but is that stuff on any online streaming service?

Another thing is that I feel like there are many separate streaming services now, and if I have to pay around $6 for each service, that adds up. If there's only one show I'd watch on their service, I'm not sure if it would be really worth it.

I wonder how that compares to the cost of monthly subscriptions for streaming services you'd pay each month.

I assume it is... somewhere (there are so many), but my family hasn't ever asked for content they couldn't find streaming or online, so it just hasn't been a problem for us.

True. We only pay for Netflix, Hulu and Apple TV+ and that total I think is about $30/mo.

We used to (especially in the early part of the century) buy at least 2-4 DVDs a month *and* pay for DirecTV (at $100+ a month), so we pay far less now and have way more content to choose from.

Makes sense.
I don't watch a whole lot of TV.. I don't have cable or any other type of premium TV, and the only streaming service I have is Amazon Prime - And I rarely watch anything there. When I do watch something, it's often something on OTA broadcast TV. Premium TV service and streaming services have so much content, and I don't really feel like watching TV enough for me to get my money's worth from them. Without the TV subscriptions, I suppose I can more easily buy an occasional movie or TV show (on optical disc or whatever). I haven't been buying content very often either - only when something comes out that I really want, which has been sporadic.

Commercials and air-times/schedules prevent that from being a viable model in my household. I was doing the Plex DVR thing like I mentioned (and stripping commercials), but also like I said, nobody ended up watching the content.

I do watch live news shows when there's some extremely news-worthy event that I'm curious about (which is rare), but even that ends up coming from a streaming service usually (e.g. CNN or CNBC via Samsung TV+ or whatever they call that free thing that comes with Samsung sets).

and i remember some artists were releasing small cds with short tracks and they were just as expensive. in this case i'd rather own the song than have the physical media.

if it's not owning it in their book it's probably fair use in some court's book.

that sounds like you are watching a teaser episode and you have to pay more to get the rest.
