Under a new system I have rebuilt mpv but I no
longer have sound. MPlayer has sound with
the command:
mplayer -ao alsa:device=plughw=1.3 .....

As I understand the mpv documentation, I should
change this to:

mpv --audio-device=/alsa/device=plughw=1.3 ......

but this doesn't work. I have tried every variation
of stuff to the right of --audio-device=
with or without device or plughw. Nothing gives me sound.

What should I use on the command line?

Thanks for your help.

These work for me (season to taste):

$ mpv --audio-device=pulse/alsa_output.pci-0000_00_1f.3.analog-stereo
File.mkv # desktop speakers

$ mpv --audio-device=pulse/alsa_output.pci-0000_01_00.1.hdmi-stereo
File.mkv # HDMI TV speakers

mpv --audio-device=help should give a comprehensive list of all
available devices.

I should note that I usually use mpv as a backend to smplayer and
pavucontrol for quick point and click sound configuration.

Thanks, this is what (finally) did work:

--audio-device=alsa/hdmi:CARD=NVidia,DEV=0

even though the card is device 1 but the
first (0) NVidia card.

No amount of experimentation would have given
me that.

Thanks again.

You have told me that several times. Without going into gritty
details I have to use up/down arrows to select an option.
