Hi All,

I have seen some chatter about creating a new W11
news group.

I personally would rather it just be merged with
this group.

Reasons:

1) Here is where a considerable amount of intellectual
property is d found both W10 and W11

2) W11 is just the same pig as W10, just a different
color lipstick

Your thoughts?

-T

While we're at it...

Let's get ahead of the curve. Let's create a Windows 12 group right now.

And Windows 13. And Windows 14. And...

BTW, saw a TV add for Windows 11 a day or so ago. The virus is spreading...

That's too linear progression. "Windows X" has a good vibe to it.

Which was the right thing to do. There are already ngs for XP, 7 and 10. 11
should be no different.

Windows 11 is absolutely the last OS they're doing.

There won't be sufficient userbase left, to do another.

Agreed, there aren't enough significant differences for it to be treated
as a separate release. It's clearly a continuation of the previous
release in the same way that MacOS 10.11 is a continuation of 10.10.

It's prettier and seems to have worked on how clunky Windows 10 felt. I
don't find it anymore responsive than 10 was but a lot of the bugs I
faced there are resolved (Bluetooth being unreliable, for one).

I understand your point here but there is one significant issue: 11 is
essentially locking 10 users out if they don't have a TPM chip or a
recent-enough computer. As such, there is likely to be a compromise in
the amount of users the newsgroup would host.

On the other hand, the users there would be forced to focus on 11 rather
than comment on both 10 and 11. I retract my earlier statement: an 11
group makes sense.

I could go either way but I guess having 11 is fine.
If I were running 10, I would probably not want to hear a bunch of complaints about what's happening to 11.
But on the other hand probably what happens to 10 happens to 11 in some areas.

You can't win. But I vote for the 11 group being fine if anyone wants to keep a tally?!! LOL

LOL. Windows 11 is rather good and won't alienate people if that's what
you're suggesting. It still needs to optimize a couple of things to be
better but it's certaintly more stable and reliable than Windows 10 was
and the latter wasn't bad.

Agree. Only a few ppl contributed to the recent spate of win11 threads.

Cross-posting apparently a thing so join 10/11 topics can be sent to
both groups.

All releases of OSs are arbitrary and some are more significant than others.

Microsoft has chosen to make a big deal of new releases which appear at
unpredictable times. Apple does it differently with a more transitional
type of OS release on a regular cycle.

nntp groups seem to reflect those differences.

Interesting assertion (and I'm not saying you're wrong). How do you see
the company surviving - revenue from Office365 etc.? (Surely that mostly
runs on Windows machines - OK, there might be Mac etc. versions, but
probably not a significant number.) Or are you suggesting it won't
survive?

They're doing quite well on Azure.

*******

Once you commit to a stupid idea, there's no backing out.

If this "secure hardware" idea obliterates the userbase,
you can't come along and say

Our Windows 12 will be the least secure OS yet

so you are stuck with your strategy of making people
buy new computers. You can't suddenly have second thoughts
and strip all the security features and back out of the
mess you made. Who would be trusting you at that point ?

Oh, sorry :-) That idea of buying new computers was just silly.

They'll have to build the userbase on the rubble of the decision.

The three year old machine thing, would be consistent with
maintaining the "paying Enterprise customers". As three years
just happens to be the lease cycle on computers, and Enterprise
consumers are the most likely to "automatically" meet the
hardware requirements. This means the part of the user base
that pays money for this, they're the "perfect user". The
rest of us are just a cost center. And we're being used for
test purposes, so what happens to us is of no concern.
A smaller base doing test for the Enterprise stable release
customer, won't matter.

The only purpose in having a billion installations of Windows 10,
is that's a billion machines not running a competing install. It
is a way to starve the competition.

Paul

Agreed and agreed.

But after running:

https://github.com/Sycnex/Windows10Debloater

they feel the same.

M$'s (alpha) releases of W11 are missing the bloat.
Bet the bloat will General (beta) release.

That's quite possible. Either way, when the warranty expires and the
machine is no longer supported, I'm back to Linux on it.

Technically, Linux leaves Windows in the dust.

But most folks are forced onto Windows as they can not
get the apps they need. Sucks, but the developers
don't want to spend the money on porting their stuff.

Microsoft? OK, you could be right. Let me think about it while I fiddle

There are significant differences for me, as none of my hardware will
run W11.

Maybe my desktop using vmware player if it can emulate a TPM.

So the point for me is for how long W10 will receives updates, specially
security updates, and whether the software I use that demands Windows
will run on 10.

That's an egg and chicken problem. If the people migrate, the developers
will follow. However, most Linux users don't pay a cent, and maybe
windows devs are not interested in that.
