I would like to identify the generation of an Intel CPU. In Windows I
start Control Panel, choose Control Panel\System and Security\System
then for System\Processor it says;

Intel (R) Core(TMP) i5 CPU M 520 @ 2.40 GHz 2.40 GHz

Which CPU generation am I? In generation, how could you identify the
generation of any Intel CPU?

wiki says arrandale is the mobile equivalent of clarkdale, which is 1st
gen core i5

Mine is AMD but when I ran OCCT (v6.2.0) a lot of information was
forthcoming, e.g., Code name (Denab), Package (AM3 938 socket), Technology
(45nm), etc.

https://www.ocbase.com/
https://www.ocbase.com/download/edition:Personal

Not sure if it reports the generation as I didn't test on an Intel CPU.

ark.intel.com then enter the CPU part number in the search bar.

I tried "M 520" and it didn't work. There
is something wrong with that number.

Here is your actual entry. "i5-520m"

https://ark.intel.com/content/www/us/en/ark/products/47341/intel-core-i5-520m-processor-3m-cache-2-40-ghz.html

Arrandale. Now, Wikipedia for a mobile.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arrandale

Arrandale ==> Westmere

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Intel_CPU_microarchitectures

Westmere First generation ? Year 2010 or so.

*******

A search against the site:cpu-world.com
will give a good summary. Unfortunately, they
don't have a Generation field in there. I use
this site for figuring out whether upgrades
are available.

https://www.cpu-world.com/CPUs/Core_i5/Intel-Core%20i5%20Mobile%20I5-520M%20CP80617004119AE%20%28BX80617I5520M%29.html

There's a CPUZ picture near the bottom of that page,
on the right, and I can see the same info you posted,
which means the software didn't do a good job of
extracting the model info. The softwares usually
use the code Intel posts, that accesses privileged
CPUID instructions, and then there is a flow chart
for decoding in the Intel posted code. Some string
in there must be poorly formatted for this task.

I’d fire up msinfo32 in the search box on the taskbar (or the windows menu,
depending on which Windows version is running). msinfo32 will give lots of
info, some of it useful.

a m520 sounds like a 1st gen core i laptop cpu. note that this is distinct
from core duo, core quad, etc. intel put four (later 5) numbers in the cpu
designation starting with the 2nd gen, and the first one or two gave the
generation. a 3570 would be a 3rd generation core i, for example. a 12900
would be a 12th gen. that cpu only has 3 numbers, odds are excellent that
it’s a 1st gen.

1st gen, surely. only three numbers. 5th gen would be something like 5650,
four numbers, first one gives the gen.
