The user switched over to her Microsoft account and when she next used
her machine, she forgot her PIN #

For whatever reason when she tried to log in using the password option
that did not work.

There was an option to recover and they would sent the code to her email.

She was unable to log in to her email account on her phone and the only
working email she had was on her computer.

Her computer had no other log-in options...so I took it to my shop and
ran a password reset utility.

I blanked out every password for every account listed...but still could
not log into her account...however now I could log in using the
administrator account and use her email from there to finally reset P/W
and log in to her account.

I told her from now on to use local account only.

I'm not sure what the point is of logging in using the MS account unless
one is using MS software such as Office 365

There are some features that do require the account, maybe one drive? not sure about that but supposedly the store needs your account.

It would be nice if they just let you enter the hotmail account when you need it rather than at login.

For all the years I've been on Windows, I'm not sure if I couldn't count the # of times I needed a MS account. I do use it though, it does
sync some settings, and I've reloaded and had some replicate, but it's not that many that you're saving and hour of setup.

It might be used for the Windows Store.

I'd say you did quite well, getting that far. Normally,
the "real Administrator" account is turned off, so you
could not log into it. The user account on the machine,
the first account made on the machine, belongs to the
Administrator group, and that's "enough administrator
capability to run the machine". You never want to be in
the situation, in the Accounts control panel, of having
erased or disabled all the items that say "administrator",
because then there is nothing to administer the machine.

You can't flatten the MSA account using local tools, as
you discovered. Problems there, you need to follow the
password reset procedure or whatever, and the email address
you used, had better still be functional in that case.

In Windows 10, if a user is using Edge, using the Microsoft account
would allow for their passwords, bookmarks and sessions to be carried
over to other devices without too much intervention from the user.
Additionally, your ad profile, if you choose to have one, is migrated
and you have a stronger chance of getting relevant ads. Your Outlook.com
e-mail address is also configured automatically as is your OneDrive if
you use them.

Yes. The machine is fully functional and I created a 2nd user so if she does that again, there will be an account to use.

Now...how do I remove the administrator account from the login options?

First thing I did was backup her data onto another machine

If worst came to worse, I could have done a re-install.

In an administrator command prompt window or similar...

net user administrator /active:no

Close, then open the Accounts window again, and it should be gone.

*******

There are two ways to run the machine.

"Mary" Real Administrator
Administrators group Off

versus

"Mary" Real Administrator
(limited) On

Notice that both setups have just one account with
Administrator privilege. The second setup, prevents
Mary from installing software. A limited account
doesn't have Administrator rights, so the word "Administrator"
is missing on such an account.

In the second diagram, the Real Administrator exists,
to install programs.

The second configuration is for individuals who can't
be trusted to administer a machine. The first configuration
assumes "Mary" will never try to switch off her own
administrator rights :-) If the Mary account is borked
or the Profile for it is corrupted (the profile being
some registry files in C:\users\Mary), then it may help
to have another account you could use. While you *can*
repair Windows now (dism and sfc), using offline commands and a
WinPE boot, that's more stressful for the repair person.

I would say that the configuration, reflects the
support options the user has. Who is going to get
them out of the ditch, when something breaks, is
a consideration.

I don't think my own installations are that defensively
designed. Probably, because I'd just pave over them :-)
Or, restore from backup.

Paul

Thanks.

I should have known.
After all, I created the new user from the command prompt.

In Windows 10, Sync in Edge is enabled once the user signs on in Edge(to
complete browser setup, i.e. first or later use)with the Microsoft Account.
Your ad profile isn't migrated, it's in one location on MSFT servers
linked to the Microsoft Account.

Any and all Microsoft Accounts(Outlook/Live/Hotmail/Msn.com and any 3rd
party email address[any email address can be an MSA, just Outlook.com)
used as a Microsoft account have an Outlook.com(web UI) Inbox and
independent, like OneDrive, regardless of Edge user or Edge options for
sync'ing.
Auto-Configuration for any MSA and related services occurs at MSA
creation. The MSA online Inbox at Outlook.com and OneDrive don't need to
be used to configure automatically - if one has an MSA, configuration has
already occurred before using Outlook.com or OneDrive.

The Pin is encrypted.
For those unable to remember a sequence of four digits it might be best to
suggest use of their birth date MMDD.

There are other reasons beyond O365 to use a MSFT Account(MSA)
Windows, Office, Skype, OneDrive, XBox, MSA email Inbox, Microsoft
Store, and controlling your privacy and security settings.
Additionally, an MSA logon in Windows provides an option only available
with an MSA - the ability to reinstall and activate Windows after a major
hardware change(e.g. mobo). The option only being available for a Win10
license digitally linked to the MSA.

O365 and also Office versions since 2013 have required an MSA to install
and activate Office.

It is correct that a MSFT account is not necessary for using Windows
In fact, I always recommend the first account setup on a Windows
installation be a Microsoft account(first account is always an admin) and
once setup and logged on create another logon as a Local
account(additional accounts Local or another MSA) will be a standard
account. Then use the initial MSA to change the Local to an admin.

Thereafter the user can then determine their own preference for using the
Local or MSA.
- even if using a Local, the logon with an MSA in Office remains
necessary for use of all Office features. Not logging on with an MSA in
Office yields a reduced mode(can't create or edit) and removes the linked
license.

I know. I actually appreciate that about Edge, to be honest. I'm always
tempted to switch from Brave to it but I very quickly get wary of the
ads I am suddenly bombarded by.

I use SeaMonkey, Edge and Chrome each as an available option to open from
the Task Bar. For Default in an MSA profile, use Edge; in a Local profile
use Chrome.
- I don't really pay too much attention to the ads(i.e. good at ignoring).
For both Edge and Chrome my pet peeve is the 'Other Folders, Other
Bookmarks' should be just named Favorites and Bookmarks.

It depends on the sites you most frequent. In some cases, the ads are
easy to ignore but on others, they really take over the experience and
make you feel like you're seconds away from being asked to install Bonzi
Buddy. Brave blocks by default and gives you the option to support your
sites through the cryptocurrency you generate from viewing less
intrusive ads. The only thing stopping that site from being compensated
is their decision to participate in the Brave program. A lot don't and
follow the traditional model but that's their decision not to get
compensated, not mine.

For email - Tbird is quite popular. For news, not too much different for
general plain text usage.

While I do keep a few email accounts in SeaMonkey and TBird, and even
WLM(also use it for an html private news group) - my preferred email
client remains Outlook(currently OL365).

For a time, I liked and used Cliqz.
- which you should be somewhat familiar. Brave's search engine was
acquired from the Cliqz in 2020 after Cliqz shut down its browser and
search engine.
