Windows play store now has Windows subsystem for Android.
It is said to be installable on Win10 or Win 11. I could not get it installed on Win10 but I did on Win11.

I found no tutorial though.
Anyone here know how to use this?

I can't even see see it available in the store, let alone get it to
install on Win10

You need version 22000 or higher for Windows 10. Mine is 19043.1165 21H1.
Where does this windows version 22000 come from?

Must be Win 10 Insiders.
I took my Win10 machine off the Insiders program a while back so I guess that explains why it did not install.

Win11 is of course Insiders

I wonder how many insiders are left on Win10, wouldn't most of them have
leapt to Win11 now?

There were some stories in the last couple days,
that the release of Windows 11 on October 5, will
not include Android execution support. So whatever
happens to the App Store on that front, remains
academic.

I did not see any mention of Insiders getting to
test anything, but maybe you will succeed. Since WSL2
uses the Store, perhaps some part of Android will too.
Just like Linux support did not come through Windows Update,
there is no need for Android to work any differently,
and it'll be an App Store subsystem to download too.
Not only do you need to look for an "Android File Explorer"
(as an application thing), but first you'd need whatever
passes for an "Android subsystem" to come in from the
App Store. A minimum of two things to download.

Paul

I wrote a few tutorials for running the Windows subsystem for Linux where it
wasn't bad but WSL didn't interact with the Windows 10 hardware on my box.

I also wrote a tutorial (each) for running _every free Android emulator_ on
Windows 10, where I kind of settled on Genymotion as the best overall
(although they were each _extremely_ different in many ways so it depends).

Maybe it's time to write a tutorial for Windows subsystem for Android?
Dunno. My boxes are too old to support Windows 11 (at least by the old
rules).

Please do keep us informed when you find it so that we can test it out.

Almost certainly there will be.

It's not a newsgroup, but there's already a web-based Microsoft Windows
11 forum. I think web-based forums are greatly inferior to newsgroups,
but there are some very knowledgeable good people who post and answer
questions on the Microsoft forums, although some people are terrible,
just as there are on on newsgroups, of course). And you can get a lot of
good information there.

you might want to check with android developers, who might be using this
instead of the Android emulator that Google provides with the
development environment.

I found an article here. A placeholder App appeared in the Store
on September 2nd. The binding for it, should control what OSes it
installs in. It should say right on the page, what OS it is for.

That article says: "There will be a virtual machine that provides
compatibility for the Android Open Source Project (AOSP), which provides
custom variants of Android that don't require Google Play Services support."

Does that mean the Windows subsystem uses an alternative means to access
Google Play or that Google Play will not be available on Win 11?

If the latter it will not be of much use to most consumers who want to
download and run mobile apps. The customer apps provided by businesses
are rarely available any other way (except from Apple!).

I would not expect Google to exactly bend over for this.

Of course Microsoft does not expect Google Play to work,
so they will back some other horse.

It's like the chat battles of old. When one company would
figure out a way of interworking with a competitor chat, the
competitor would promptly release an update so the attempt
would no longer work.

Part of this project, would be to tempt Android developers to
spin copies for the Windows Store, so the Android people could
be added to the talent pool. It would be for developers who
did not choose to use any of the porting tools.

The WSL2 subsystem got graphics capability, and I tested that
by installing Linux Firefox. It worked, the browser opened
in a graphics context on the desktop, but it behaved a bit
"jumpy" and probably needed a bit more refinement. Initially,
this had not been a Microsoft objective, and they waited quite
a while before introducing that feature. You can tell the
difference between a Linux Firefox and a Windows Firefox on
Windows 10, via a mark on the icon indicating it is from the
WSL2 subsystem.

Google does not allow non-original Android implementations to bundle
what is known as 'Google Apps', which includes the Play Store, Maps,
etc., etc.. The 'Google Apps' can only be supplied as an add-on.

That is why for example Lineage - an Android look alike for selected
smartphones - offers 'Gapps' (Google Apps) as a *seperate* package. See
<https://wiki.lineageos.org/gapps.html> for details.

Relevant part:

"Google apps are the proprietary Google-branded applications that come
pre-installed with most Android devices, such as the Play Store, Gmail,
Maps, etc. Due to licensing restrictions, these apps cannot come
pre-installed with LineageOS and must be installed separately."

I assume the 'Windows subsystem for Android' has a similar licensing
restriction and will therefor also unbundle the 'Google Apps'.

Bottom line: (AFAICT,) Nothing to worry about.
