What's with 3 TBird's "updates" in 6 days? Are there more "dueling code
writers" than before? This is the kind of thing that gives "open source"
a bad reputation.

What updates?
78.13.0 is the latest official.
If you are playing with anything higher - serves you right.

Beta, release, ESR are all in the same tree.

http://releases.mozilla.org/pub/thunderbird/releases/

A person would be well advised to check the "About"
and see exactly which stream they've downloaded.

For example, 91.0b4/ is a beta release, and could be
updated quite frequently. A release item like 78.13.0,
you can check the dates on the other tree entries,
to get some idea what the release schedule looks like.

An example of things not in that tree, might be "nightlies"
or "canary builds". If those exist, I don't know where they
are. If you "pull source" using Mercurial, then you
will be building the current nightly. Whereas in the old days,
downloading a tarball was sufficient, and the tarball
was in a release directory and so you could build
(and reproduce) any released item you wanted.

When a person goes to the main thunderbird page, they
should be "fed" a release item and not a beta. It's only
by visiting trees like the one above, you can (on purpose),
hook up to the beta stream instead, and the updater inside
the beta edition, searches for more betas.

Perhaps so, but Eternal September doesn't carry that group, so I thought
it might be faster to ask here than to install another service.

Thanks, anyway.

It's been "quite a while" between major version upgrades, so a few bugs
slipped through and have been worked on,

Huh? Since when has fixing bugs been bad

Nope 91.0.3 is latest release, if you install from scratch today that's
what you'll get ...

Somebody needs to refresh their groups list, E-S carried it since 3rd
April 2021

No, not yet. I am guessing tha like me, you downloaded it and installed
it over 78.13.0 (rather than accepting an automatic update offer).

91.0.x is a 'major' release, so you should expect initial 'teething'
updates.

See that big green button? What version does it give you?

Refresh your newsgroup list. (Thunderbird: right click the account
name, click Refresh in the popup window_)

I have both Alt.comp.software.firefox and alt.comp.software.thunderbird
and I am getting it through news.eternal-september.org

It is good to have newsgroups with Mozilla products information.

OK. I have a theory :-)

In the past, you might be familiar with
one 50MB update after another coming in.

Each update was a full copy of the code.
It allowed jumping from one release to
another. You could go 78.13.0 to 91.0.3
in one 50MB jump.

I noticed the other day, something that
I was updating, had managed to use a delta
method, which just might be incremental,
and requires stopping at each step along
the way. 91.0.1 to 91.0.2 has a delta updater.
91.0.2 to 91.0.3 has a delta updater. The updaters
are smaller, but you must stop at each "station".

So I go back to the tree and look.

OK, in some cases, it might take two deltas, in other
cases it could be done in one delta. They do enough
of them, you don't have to do 91.0.1, 91.0.2, 91.0.3.

Well, yes and no. It was installed over 78.13.0 in July, but it was an
automatic update offer, e.g. "...Thunderbird can't upgrade to the
current level...", just as all the other updates.

Since I only do updates when indicated by TBird, it went in single steps
from .01, .02, .03. Even the 78.x versions were being updated more
frequently, but not THAT frequently.

Hmmm... yet another quirk. That process is not an option. "Refresh"
appears in the "manage newsgroup subscriptions" area, not account. The
only mozilla group in the Current Account list is it-alt.comp.mozilla.
However, not being Italian...

Hitting refresh New newsgroups locks up, with a "please wait" and
stalled progress indicator.

Are you using the 32 or 64 bit version?

Yes there have been a few, none have bitten me, one was annoying enough
that I logged a ticket, and I was pleasantly surprised it was picked up
and fixed, I was a little worried it wasn't going to make it into a
91.0.y release but wait for 91.2.y, but it has made it out already.

> I think you're right about this.

That's certainly why they don't push current TB 78.13.y users over to TB
91.0.y, until FF 78.15.y ESR hits the buffers and they have to jump TB
users to the FF 91.3.y code-base, but none of that makes TB 91.0.y
unofficial.

1. Thunderbird isn't a Mozilla product since 2012 even though it still
has the Mozilla name in some places.

"Thunderbird is now part of MZLA Technologies Corporation, a wholly
owned subsidiary of Mozilla Foundation."

<https://blog.thunderbird.net/2020/01/thunderbirds-new-home/>

2. Reading the release notes answers many questions.

<https://www.thunderbird.net/en-US/thunderbird/releases/>

3. Most users are still using version 78.13.0 the current release on
that train.

4. A new release 91.0 doesn't update from 78, a user needs to download
and install it over the 78 version.

5. Sometime next week, versions 78.14.0 and 91.1.0 will be released.

All versions of TBird were installed in exactly the same way on this
computer for years. A notice that an updated version was available pops
up, the file was downloaded and the update was installed. There was
nothing unusual in the process.

Unfortunately, this is typical of open source software.

It is my understanding that some virus applications will force an update.

I only use Windows Defender on my Windows laptop.

If you read the release notes for 91 you would see right at the beginning.

"Thunderbird version 91.0 is only offered as direct download from
thunderbird.net and not as an upgrade from Thunderbird version 78 or
earlier. A future release will provide updates from earlier versions."

That is also in the release notes for 91.0.3.

So, now go read them, and you will know why your 91.0 updated frequently
to 91.0.3.

Because some people use a computer to get things done, not screw around

As a TBird user for decades, when I say that the update process is the
same as it has always been, it supersedes *many* virus applications or
anything else. EVERY version sent me to the TBird site, was downloaded
and the .exe was run to install. Whether or not there is a reason why
it's always been installed as an .exe instead of the way FireFox
updates, I can't say, but I also don't see why it matters.

Well, frequent updates is a documented advantage of open source
software. if you do not like that, install the ESR version instead.
