Are numbered footnotes or footnote symbols better and why?

My opinion is numbered footnotes, but do not restart the numbering on each
page; restart them per chapter or per book.

Numbered footnotes means you will not run out of numbers, but if you are
using symbols then you might run out of symbols to use.

Numbered-per-chapter also lets people make references to them in a
normal manner, eg "chapter 5, note 27". I can't imagine what you do when
they use symbols.

I tend to agree with you and Peter, but that's due to the kind of books
we tend to read. In novels and other belletristic works footnotes tend
to be a very rare thing, mostly none at all and sometimes three or four
for the whole book. In these case you rarely find more than one on a
page and nearly never more than two.

For these works numbers, running up to a whopping three in several
hundred pages, just look silly. For a single and rare note a star
referring to the bottom of the page is fine.

In our recent review the footnotes went up to No. 24. In its
predecessor there were 108. Symbols would have been crazy.
