Yes, a browser question, I have Slack 15 on DVD but upgrading is held
up for complicated family reasons irrelevant here. Seamonkey fans just
want to tell me to upgrade Seamonkey.

Is there a way to print to a real printer from the version of
Seamonkey (2.40) that came with Slackware 14.2?

I'm using lprng with a new Lexmark b&w laser printer and ethernet/IP
connection via a router. Printing from xpdf and the command line work
fine with lprng-style /etc/printcap. Seamonkey only offers to "print
to file". Nothing I've tried in about:config changes that.

Is there a way to make Seamonkey 2.40 (or Firefox 45.2) recognize &
talk to a physical printer under Slackware 14.2?

IIRC Seamonkey uses the printer set up by CUPS. CUPS should be able to
access lpr printers too.

I also user Slackware 14.2 and lprng on some machines. My seamonkey is
upgraded to version 2.53.7.1 as suggested by

http://ftp.slackware.com/pub/slackware/slackware64-14.2/ChangeLog.txt

Tue Apr 20 19:44:02 UTC 2021
patches/packages/seamonkey-2.53.7.1-x86_64-1_slack14.2.txz: Upgraded.
This update contains security fixes and improvements.
For more information, see:
https://www.seamonkey-project.org/releases/seamonkey2.53.7.1
(* Security fix *)
+--------------------------+

Unfortunately it seems as if seamonkey, like firefox, does no longer work
with lprng. Instead I print to a file which then is printed. I don't use
seamonkey much myself, usually I use firefox instead. It used to be
possible to print with firefox by having a file /etc/gtk-2.0/gtkrc with
the following contents:

-8<--------------
gtk-print-backends = "lpr,file"
-8<--------------

But nowadays that does no longer work. Maybe it still works with your old
version of seamonkey. It used to work with firefox in Slackware 14.2
before some update that came as a security fix.

regards Henrik

If I recall correctly that hack stopped working starting on firefox
version 50 and later.

For a while I couldn't upgrade firefox or thunderbird till I dismissed
the machine.

it stops working when you open Windows.

That DOES work! Seamonkey 2.40 now offers both "print to file" and
"print to lpr". Selecting the latter brings up a pane into which to
insert the full lpr command -- the behavior I had expected as default.

Thank you so much! Tweaking GTK is an arcanum I never would have
thought of and wouldn't have known how to do had I thought of it.

When a very mixed bag of priority demands on my time and attention are
under control, I'll get Slackware 15 up and running. In the meantime,
TYVM!
