My "winver" command indicates 22631.3296 as well.

No difference noticeable.

Win11 Home, highest patch is KB5035853 the 2024-03 Cumulative Update.

The Preview KB5035942 is not installed.

The system doesn't get any faster, but we get older, so the system
just *seems* faster.

It could be that the update has freed some blockage in MajorLanGod's
system which was purely local and individual.

The LCU folder (Last Cumulative Update), has anywhere from
100,000 to 200,000 files in it. Microsoft creating and keeping
that cache, makes a mess of the $MFT. The $MFT then, might
end up with 600,000 entries instead of 400,000 entries.
You cannot shrink the $MFT, at least, I'm not aware
of a mechanism that a user can use (no, I have *never*
tried to "copy a b" the file set on C: to a "fresh" partition,
that would never work).

Some aspects of a file system, may become a bit rough
above around 1,000,000 files.

If you want to count files, use Agent Ransack and search
for something like a blank line. it should count the
files and folders it found for you, and that will give
some idea what the object count in the file system is.

Microsoft has been working on degrading file deletion
performance, at least in Explorer. It's possible del *.*
kind of thing still works. This is something I test
on the Insider, but I don't run that very often these
days. There is a reason Microsoft was "recommending"
an SSD some months back. They have a plan.

These issues also cannot be fixed by buying a 14000 MB/sec
NVMe drive. It's the speed of the file system stack
which is the problem. The hardware contribution becomes
"smaller and smaller" as the speed goes up. Just the
embarrassing software delay... remains.

I don't need the software stack to run faster, but
I'll be madder than hell to find it is running slower.
They chip away at our performance with CPU microcode
updates already.

Paul
