How old is it? Batteries lose battery life after a while. Thinkpads
usually can be opened, so you could get a new battery for it.

I am writing this on a 2018 Thinkpad whose external battery had to be
replaced last year since it had gone down to 20% capacity. You can check
the actual battery capacity/capacities with
acpi -V
You probably need to install acpi first:
sudo apt install acpi

Older Thinkpads have batteries that pop on the back. There is a catch to
release it. It might also be possible to get a higher capacity battery.
Aftermarket replacement batteries are available off e-bay (as are replacement
power bricks).

Be sure to get an exact *new* replacement from a reputable
seller. There are lots of recycled junk batteries offered
that won't even charge or charge to 25% of what they're
supposed to have. BTW, it's not so much the age of the old
battery that is critical but rather the number of recharging
cycles it's endured.

I was able to get a higher-capacity battery for my 2010-vintage Lenovo T410.
It has three rows of cells rather than the original two, so it sticks out
the back a bit - but I now get four hours or so on a charge, when the old
battery was barely giving me one.

Even the original parts like have sat on the shelf for years. Lithium
Ion Batteries age even if unused. And modern machines use like half
the power.

Hello!

Just for the benefit of less experienced people, this is what I did on my
asus expertbook:

1. tlp and tweak the defaults to suit you.
2. Disable intel vmd in the bios (this made a huge difference).
3. Disable any unused or unnecessary services.
4. Use a light weight window manager.
5. If you like, go with a light weight linux.
6. Use cli tools and terminal applications when you have good options
compared with gui applications.

That's about it when it comes to what I do.

Yes, some replacements are a little loose. I had one like that in my old
2010-ish X201 and sometimes the battery would work itself loose on my
lap. Really annoying when the laptop just dies all of a sudden.

Turn down the display brightness and see the result on powertop. It's
amazing and exciting.

Unlike older battery tech (eg Lead Acid, etc.) when battery life is measured
in time, lithium batteries have an upper limit on charge/discharge cycle
count. 6 years could be long enough to reach that limit though.

True! That's another one. I'm actually used to having my screen brightness
set at a lower setting and that saves a lot too.
