NB: depends on features available in GNU date 8.25. There may be substitutions for other versions
of date(1). Your mileage may vary. Always read the label. Not valid in Quebec.

For what it's worth, at least part of the problem is that, while I posted
the command "unfolded", somewhere along the line it folded (perhaps in your
reader?) and you now have a command split across two lines, without a
line-continuation character.

I dont know why your date(1) does not support the GNU -d option; who's
date(1) are you running? (It can't be a POSIX date(1); POSIX date(1) only
recognizes the -u option, and none of the others that your date(1) (or mine)
